For Athena’s 1st birthday 🌹

You’re on your way now
365 days came round and made it count
Every single way that we doubted us, you made it out
Never delayed your emotions just to keep us around

Not even consciously choosing where you wanna be
Daddy can tell where you choose to be subconsciously
And cause I once handed out my caution for free
You helped me notice that I couldn’t just leave without fees

And if I can’t leave without fees applying to me
Then that means fees gotta apply to everyone around me
Whether emotional, social, someone is paying me
Because I paid in full every day with reality

Your first deposit of life is what they call birthday
But I’m the type to not even celebrate birthdays
Even your birthday to me is just another day
But it’s okay cause I value even the boring days

Consistency is the thing that people try to display
You do it naturally, and we did too when we made our place
In life’s race, there’s no second place, everybody’s first
That’s why I made sure i passed the baton to my girl

When I say girl, at the time, I’m talking bout your mommy
6 years of tryna find ourselves left us feeling lonely
We both assumed that the best way to live was thru and thru
When thru and thru kept neglecting everything we been thru

Constants and promises always comes after expectation
That’s why for years I didn’t lobby or buy a PlayStation
Wanted to make sure all my time went to shit worth investing
Until I learned making sure of time was just kinda extra

Time will supply the sides of life you need to stand on
Or go toward when that life you stand on was heading way wrong
I used to put all transgressions I had inside of new songs
Until I realized that waiting for listens was taking too long

So in this first year I had with you, I can never forget
Watching you grow up everyday was something no one can predict
No one’s prepared for parenthood the way they expect
That’s why I dropped all my expectations for who you’d be next

And hopefully when you turn two, you’ll understand my view
But if you don’t, I won’t ever let that turn it to proof
That anything that I did for you was just overdue
Because I only have time in life to show up for you
