At UVA Engineering, we are building a brighter future through engineering for the greater good.
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Blast off! 🚀

This week’s SpaceX launch is carrying something unusual: a tiny model of human tissue built by UVA Engineering biomedical engineers and their collaborators at Virginia Tech.

The tissue model, made from the types of cells that help wounds heal in the body, will spend 22 days aboard the International Space Station so the team can study how those cells behave in microgravity. What they learn could help guide the development of future therapies on Earth and in space.

“I have never been prouder to be a biomedical engineer!” said Shayn Peirce-Cottler, professor and chair of biomedical engineering.

Last week’s UVA Engineering Employer Spotlight brought students together with SZNS Solutions, a technology consulting firm specializing in AI, cloud computing, data engineering and blockchain solutions with deep ties to UVA.

UVA’s John Lee, Andrew Levine, Drew Hollar, Ryan Bannon, Christine Kim and Arthur Oker returned to Grounds to connect students and share more about the company, its work and career opportunities in the technology industry. The event provided opportunities for current students to learn, network, practice interviewing skills and get a glimpse into what a career with SZNS Solutions might look like.

The event also highlighted the lasting connections between UVA and its alumni, giving students the chance to hear firsthand how their engineering education can translate into careers in a rapidly evolving technology landscape. by @uvaengineering

A hug from home, right when you need it most. 🫂🧡💙

With exams around the corner, UVA parents came to Grounds to remind our Hoos that they’ve got a whole community in their corner! From hugs and sweet treats to words of encouragement and some very good four-legged friends, Hoo Needs a Hug brought a little extra love to E-Way as students headed to and from class.

A big thank-you to all the parents who showed up to share some love with our students. Sometimes, all you need is a hug (and maybe a puppy) to make a tough week feel a little brighter. by @uvaengineering

Engineering in Action: Safaa Mahbub

What happens when the tools engineers use to measure how websites perform are no longer keeping up with the complexity of the web? Safaa Mahbub spent her summer helping find the answer.

A computer science and data science student at UVA, Safaa was selected from more than 3,200 applicants to intern at the University of Kassel in Germany through the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) program. She worked as a Web Complexity Software Engineering Intern with the university's Distributed Systems group, focusing on web analysis and developing new ways to measure the complexity and performance of modern websites.

Her project focused on developing new ways to measure how websites load and become functional. She worked with Google Lighthouse, a tool commonly used to audit website performance, while researching newer metrics that could provide a more complete picture of how websites perform.

Safaa then implemented six new audits into the group's custom web crawler. Because the existing tools did not collect all the information needed for these metrics, she also developed custom JavaScript and TypeScript gatherers to collect new data, or artifacts, which could then be used to calculate the metrics.

One of the most challenging parts of the project was figuring out how to turn research concepts into a working system.

“I had to figure out myself how to implement the system,” Safaa said. “I was given feedback, and I was able to refine the program.”

Through the experience, Safaa gained hands-on experience in software engineering, web analysis, data collection, and research-driven development, while contributing to ongoing research at the University of Kassel.

Her advice to other students considering an internship is simple: Don't be afraid to ask questions.

“Communication is the biggest takeaway and will help you so much in job settings as well in life,” she said. by @uvaengineering

Today, UVA Engineering celebrated the expansion of the Center for Applied Biomechanics.

Students, faculty and staff gathered to mark the conversion of 5,000 square feet of former warehouse space into lab space, expanding CAB’s capacity for injury prevention research and creating new opportunities for researchers and students.

The expansion also includes a new Compact Impact Sled from Messring, which will allow CAB researchers to simulate impact events, like vehicle crashes, in a controlled, repeatable environment and further their work to improve automobile safety.

More space and new capabilities will help CAB researchers continue tackling important challenges in injury prevention and vehicle safety while Engineering for the Greater Good. by @uvaengineering

This week's UVA Engineering Employer Spotlight featured Rolls-Royce, the engineering force behind many technologies used in the air, at sea and on land for more than 100 years. UVA Engineering is home to the Rolls-Royce University Technology Center on Advanced Materials Systems, one of only three Rolls-Royce UTCs in the United States. It focuses on world-class, collaborative research related to advanced material systems for extreme aerospace environments.

Students had the chance to connect with Rolls-Royce to learn more about the company and its paths in civil aerospace, defense, power generation and research. This event provided opportunities to learn, network, practice interviewing skills and get a first-row glimpse at what a career with Rolls-Royce might look like.

UVA Engineering alumni and current Rolls-Royce employees Alice Pandaleon and Finley Pettitt, both materials science and engineering graduates, along with Morgan Carr, a mechanical engineering graduate, joined students for the event and shared their experiences building careers after graduation. by @uvaengineering

Looking for a more flexible English proficiency test option? 📚🦉

We've got some news for you.

UVA Engineering is expanding its options for prospective graduate students by accepting the Duolingo English Test as an English-language proficiency test for graduate applications! A minimum score of 120 on your DET will now meet our English proficiency requirement.

The DET offers a more accessible and flexible option for applicants: You can take it online at any time, receive your results within two days and pay less than you would for many other English proficiency tests.

So... all that Duolingo practice might be paying off. 😉

Engineering in Action: Lilly George

This summer, Lilly George traded her office chair and desktop computer for the passenger seat.

She spent 10 weeks working with MITRE’s Autonomous and Intelligent Systems Department to create and conduct tests to measure how sensors used to operate autonomous vehicles respond to extreme temperatures. The broader goal of her project, she said, is to determine what safety inspections need to be added to ensure safe operation of autonomous trucks for deployment in rural routes that often experience harsh, cold weather and make trucking a dangerous endeavor.

“It was a lot of on-the-go problem solving,” Lilly, a UVA mechanical engineering student, said. “For instance, one of the wires for a sensor I was working with was shorter than I expected, so I had to figure it out right then and there to keep the project moving.”

But for Lilly, the experience was about more than getting hands-on robotics experience.

“This summer helped me gain confidence in my career goals and what I want to pursue after graduation,” she said. “Going into my fourth year, there are a lot of big decisions that come up and this experience has helped me decide what direction I want to take my career.”

She highly encourages anyone with the opportunity for an internship to take it.
“If you’re given the opportunity to try something new or try a new path, I think you should take it,” she said. by @uvaengineering
