Congrats to Meghan Lee (Political Science and Linguistics ’26), UVM’s latest Fulbrighter to Taiwan! Meg is a member of UVM's club basketball team. She earned her TESOL certificate at UVM and is a steady presence in the Burlington Public Schools after-school programs, where she’s been a core staff member since fall 2022.

Meg was a research intern with the U.S. State Department in Uruguay during the 2024-25 academic year. Upon her return to the U.S., she worked with survivors of interpersonal violence in Baltimore as a summer intern through the Shepherd Higher Education Consortium on Poverty.

Asked in her Fulbright application about her long-term goals, Meg wrote, "Whether I am teaching English at an international school abroad, developing social studies curriculum, or one day serving with the State Department's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the skills I learn as a Fulbright ETA in Taiwan will enable me to build bridges across cultures. I am passionate about inspiring young people to see how interconnected the world truly is, sparking curiosity for travel, meaningful exchange, and global thinking. Learning Mandarin will also help me, as a TESOL instructor, anticipate learner challenges and provide practical, empathetic support, while also allowing me to carry my foreign language skills into diplomatic spaces in the future."

Congratulations, Meg! by @uvmpols

HAPPY EARTH DAY!!🌎 the earth day movement is one example of when social movements and standing up for what you you believe in WORK. This movement would not have been possible if not for college students like you 🫵

Slide two text:
Before Earth Day, Vermont had Green Up Day. Proposed by Robert Babcock of the Burlington Free Press and supported by Governor Deane C. Davis, the first eventtook place on April 18, 1970. The highways closed from 9 a.m. to noon asvolunteers; including bused-in students who cleaned up litter. While in the skies, Governor Davis flew by helicopter to thank participants.

Slide three text:
During the first Earth Day in 1970, hundreds gathered at the University of Vermont joining the other 20 million American. There were rograms featuring slides, films, panel discussions, and displays responding to growing environmental concerns. The event reflected a shared sense of urgency about the damage being done to the planet. The success of the first Earth Day was seen quickly as the Environmental Protection Agency was formed by December 1970. Over the next few years, the modern environmental movement was strengthened by passage of landmark environmental laws: The Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and the Endangered Species Act. Many other countries around the world followed suit and adopted similar laws. Today more than 195 countries and more than 1 billion people around the world participate in Earth Day events.
