HISTORY IS OUR COMPASS - UVU Architecture students traveled across the American West to study the buildings, streets, and cities that have shaped our region. From historic main streets to civic buildings and human-scaled neighborhoods, we explored the enduring principles of architecture and urbanism that can guide the places we build today.

By learning from the wisdom of the past, we can create a more beautiful, enduring, and humane future.

THE COMMUNITY IS OUR CLASSROOM

This week, UVU Architecture students walked historic Center Street in Provo with the mayor and city officials, studying one of Utah’s great Main Streets. They also conducted public surveys with residents to learn how they view their community's strengths and challenges.

With its rich history and distinctive architecture, Center Street offers a living classroom for exploring how we preserve the best of our cities while shaping their future. UVU students are working with the city to identify redevelopment and infill opportunities that would extend and enhance this historic treasure.

At UVU, engaging directly with communities is at the heart of what we do!

The UVU Architecture program was honored to welcome renowned Spanish architect Alejandro García Hermida, Director of the Traditional Building Cultures Foundation, this week.

Through his work, Hermida has led international initiatives to document, teach, and revitalize traditional building practices across Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. During his visit, he spent time mentoring our students and delivered an inspiring lecture titled “Preserving the Knowledge to Build Beautiful Places.”

We were even able to celebrate his birthday with him while he was here!

Thank you, Alejandro, for sharing your knowledge and inspiring the next generation of architects! #architecturestudent #architectureschool #traditionalarchitecture #traditionalurbanism by @uvuarch

Studio 3 has one more group to recognize: Cooper Hall, Hudson Wood, Macey Pace, and Shandra Fabrizio!

Their hotel in Venice integrates well into the urban landscape, drawing effectively on the pre-Renaissance Venetian style and providing canal access throughout the design.

Professors Michael Djordjevitch and Ben Felix recently took UVU Architecture’s Sacred Architecture studio on a tour of some of Salt Lake City’s most significant examples of sacred and classical architecture. Stops included the Salt Lake 20th Ward, the Masonic Temple, First Presbyterian Church, the Cathedral of the Madeleine, Temple Square, and the Greek Orthodox Church.

By experiencing these buildings firsthand, students had the opportunity to study their architectural character, spatial qualities, and details, building a rich foundation of precedents to inform their own sacred architecture projects this semester.

Congratulations to Studio 3’s award winners, William Nilson, Jaden Armstrong, and Jared Poulter!

Their design is a hotel in Venice that integrates into the urban landscape and works thoughtfully with the nearby canals. With great hierarchy in floor levels, and amazing rendering skills, the project is really brought to life.
