From clinical expertise to business owner: discover the exceptional career fluidity of a UWW Communication Sciences and Disorders degree. Explore how our distinguished COMDIS alumni leverage their advanced training to establish and lead successful private practices.

Meet Amanda Townsend, UW-Whitewater alumna and owner of Simply Spoken Therapy! Simply Spoken Therapy was created to address the need for a different approach to therapy. For a variety of reasons, Amanda felt there had to be a better way to connect with each child and their family by incorporating family goals into therapy. She was determined to create a culture of mutual respect, compassion, and kindness… a business where every client knows their therapist and can engage in open and honest conversations. She created the place she wished existed. As the practice grew, navigating the insurance process became a learning curve and an important part of building the business.

From clinical expertise to business owner: discover the exceptional career fluidity of a UWW Communication Sciences and Disorders degree. Explore how our distinguished COMDIS alumni leverage their advanced training to establish and lead successful private practices.

Meet Lauren Riess, UW-Whitewater alumna and owner of Talking Bear Speech Therapy! Lauren began her career working in Birth-Three and loved developing relationships with families and empowering them to help their children's language grow. However, large caseloads and limited sessions became frustrating, so she started looking into starting her own private practice. She loved the freedom that private practice offered, allowing her to focus more on meaningful therapy and less on the documentation and policies that came with her previous role. When starting a private practice, Lauren wished she had believed in herself more. As she learned the other aspects of opening a business, she wants people to know it's okay to make mistakes and learn as you go.
