The bear is a Finnish symbol with deep meaning. It is a familiar representation of the country’s connection to the wild.

Bear sculptures can be found across Finland, outside public buildings and homes, as well as in and around the forests, where they are made.

Finnish bear sculptures are typically rough and naive. Imperfection is celebrated and there is a tangible immediacy, energy and expression to the final works that is prized over perfection and realism.

Taisto Pehkonen has been carving for 20 years and refers to the practice as a developing craft. “There are limits to what you can do,” he says about using the chainsaw, but it is pushing those limits that excites makers like him.

A trip to Ilomantsi, the easternmost municipality of Finland.

We visited the Karhufestivaali, an annual event where carvers gather to make sculptures from logs, most often depicting bears.

Spotted: Jokes Aside Cocktail Bar, Stockholm.

A new cocktail bar in Stockholm’s Mood district.

Developed in collaboration with Swedish furniture manufacturer @verk.se and @amffastigheter, the interior brings together natural materials and local craftsmanship, creating a warm and tactile setting for the bar.

Vaarnii’s Hans Pendants fill the bar, bringing a warm, sculptural presence to the space.
