Gentlemen, rouse yourselves from the slovenly majority, Valet 7 has finally emerged from the subterranean chambers of our printing press to make its crepuscular landfall, and it’s main theme is sex.A 280-page tome of dissent against the beige mediocrity of the modern street, it is all that stands between you and inexorable march of modernity and its unseductive ills.Among much else fodder for the poet within, we sit down with Nicolas Gabard of @husbandsparis who reminds us that tailoring and indeed style are a dialogue with history—a way to inhabit a silhouette that is as much an intellectual statement as it is a physical one.We perform a necessary exorcism: the ritual cremation of a @birkenstock sandal, committing, finally, this orthopaedic monstrosity to the pyre not out of malice, but out of a sense of civic duty. Ugliness is a cardinal sin that no amount of cork-soled comfort can absolve.Following this theme of heat, @2020davidmiro of @paris_image_unlimited peels back the layers of his taste and discernment by taking us through an array of his favourite items. At great length, as is our wont, we survey and discuss the question on every well dressed chap’s mind: what makes a suit sexy and transforms its wearer into a figure of such statuesque potency that he becomes eminently beddable? We pair this with a lament for the tassel, that percussive ornament whose rhythmic clack remains the true soundtrack of a life lived in character. We reflect on a childhood where a deflated football was transmuted into a mirror ball of shimmering, dust-filled light—a first lesson in eroticism. Meanwhile, the legendary musician Tommy Mandel recalls a vanished era of rock-and-roll where fingering was fetishized in the pursuit of the decadent chord. There is, as ever, a bloody sight more to get your teeth into. And finally it’s here. Read it before the shadows grow too long and the undertakers are already in the pub.—ValetSpecial thanks to our issue’s exclusive sponsor @saphir_medailledor and to our brand partners:@humeldn@lambda_razors@donahughshop@molinarisambuca_it by @valetmagazine

In Valet Issue 4, we interviewed @nicholasbowmanscargill of @fearswatches.“A good watch is something you enjoy putting on your wrist. Except for underwear and socks, and perhaps fragrance, there’s nothing really as personal as a wristwatch, nothing as close to the skin.”Imagery by @smedleyshots by @valetmagazine

I spent many sleepless nights listening to Tommy’s album ‘Music for Insomniacs’. Then, in 2018–2019, his track ‘Allow Me to Destroy You’ was playing in every hip spot. Tommy turned out to be incredibly cool, a bit shy, but very easy-going. We interviewed him for Valet 6, and in Valet 7 we published a short autobiographical piece by him, which I illustrated with a series of self-portraits taken in a photo booth outside the train station.‘As an adolescent, when I wasn’t wrestling or hitting the books, I sat at the home spinet, practicing piano and daydreaming. I’m convinced that one reason for my relative survival mentally is the time I spent from six to sixteen, my subconscious lying dormant, leaving the analytical left brain to concentrate on fingering, harmony, and execution.’Tommy Mandel, ‘The Keys of Sex’. by @valetmagazine

‘Loss and pain are a big part of the sport, but physical pain is better than the other kinds. An opponent’s hit with the guard against the mask or a low blow such as a nasty skid-down point in line between the legs is always to be preferred over losing a bout due to one’s own technical, strategic, or other mistakes. Fencing is about loss and pain just as much as it is about winning and joy, and the memorable occasions in fencing history are miniature plays fit for the pen of a Shakespeare or a Sophocles...’Read the full ode to fencing by Maximilian Mogg in Valet 6.Images by @mashagohome by @valetmagazine

In our probing study of the true cost of living crisis in London, we set photographer and expert beer-drinker @hanson_leatherby_photography on the scent to discover the cheapest pints among a select group of drinking establishment and, ever curious as to what our well—or nefariously—earned money by in terms of broader experience, we asked him to compare the prices of the cheapest pint with the quality of the joints’ lavatories. What followed was possibly the greatest scientific contribution to our understanding of an inflationary index that really matters, inexplicably ignored by politicians, economists, national banks, and whoever pays your wages, alimony, or allowance. 1.
