40th anniversary of "The Vampire Lestat" - October 31, 1985

"Lestat really sounds like he's sitting at the table, talking to you, because that's the way I feel about him when I'm writing--that he's right there, telling me the story, leaning over my shoulder, telling me to get it right, pointing out things I should change, breathing down my neck, doing everything but biting me! Which he wouldn't dare!" - Anne Rice

I had never read Dracula. I had taken it out of the library when I was a kid, and it so scared me, just the first few pages, that I took it back to the library. Also, it was a little difficult for me to read. I was probably about 12. And I hadn't read it. The only thing I knew about vampires came from old black and white movies, and the only one I'd seen was Dracula's Daughter, which was a very early sequel. And it was all about this very dramatic, beautiful Countess Dracula, the daughter of the Count, who was cursed with vampirism, but was really a painter, an artist. So I took that very beautiful concept of vampires as tragic creatures of great sensitivity, and that's what influenced Interview with the Vampire. Only years later did I read the original Dracula. - Anne Rice

Today marks the very first official Anne Rice Day! 🫀

Last Friday, October 2, the LA City Council passed a resolution declaring October 4 as the Anne Rice Day~ an annual celebration of her immortal legacy on her birthday.

The photo of the resolution was taken by my dear friend @mjrojas28 at @rarebooksla's Union Station event!

« 'Let the spirits witness; for theirs is the knowledge of the future-both what it would be, and what I will! You are the Queen of the Damned, that's what you are! Your only destiny is evil, as well you know! But I shall stop you, if I must come back from the dead to do it. At the hour of your greatest menace it is I who will defeat you! It is I who will bring you down. Look well upon my face, for you will see me again!' »

— Mekare's prophecy to Akasha in The Queen of the Damned, which turns 38 years old today, having been published by our beloved and immortal Anne Rice on September 12, 1988.
