𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝗮 𝗴𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗽𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗦𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗶𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝗽𝘀 𝗯𝘆 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗽𝗹ó𝗹 𝗧𝗮𝗻𝘆𝗮 𝗭𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗸𝗶. Come see it in person and spend time with the work!

In Speplól’s practice, the meditative process of loom-beading becomes a form of philosophical and cultural exploration, self-reflection, and a way of passing on teachings to future generations.

🌌 For 𝙎𝙥𝙞𝙧𝙞𝙩 𝙈𝙖𝙥𝙨, Speplól (@tanyazilinski) drew inspiration from 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐨𝐬 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐨𝐫𝐲—a framework that reveals the hidden order within seemingly chaotic systems, much like the world around us. The series began with fractals and geometric patterns found in nature, but gradually shifted toward fully 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗯𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝘁𝗮𝗽𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀, their colours and forms guided by spirit. In the context of chaos theory, these spontaneous compositions become 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁’𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱—maps of memory, instinct, and lived experience.

🎤 Join us for an artist talk with Speplól Tanya Zilinski facilitated by curator Maryam Babaei on Saturday, July 26 at 1 PM. Attend in person or via Zoom — all are welcome!

🗓️ Spirit Maps is on view at MEDIAS RES Gallery until August 3 — don’t miss it!

Crossover Exhibition
by Andrew Latreille

EXHIBITION
June 11 - July 10, 2025

Opening Reception
Wednesday, June 11, 2025 from 5 - 8pm

Artist Talk
Saturday, June 21, 2025 from 2 - 3pm

The show features large-scale prints, a physical installation, and an audio-visual display from his latest body of work. This installation challenges our historical perception of forest fires by removing the blaze from its expected context. Instead of chaos and heat, Latreille captures the haunting beauty of post-burn landscapes under the reflected light of a subzero winter full moon. The result is a quiet yet powerful visual essay on climate, perception, and transformation. With each work taken during a full moon(s), we hope you join us this Wednesday for the strawberry full moon and Crossover!

Firestarters brings together artists Audie Murray and Zoe Ann Cardinal Cire, whose practices converge through abstraction, delineation, and archival processes. Through material investigations, the exhibition observes fire as both metaphor and matter—an agent of transformation that touches land, language, kinship, and memory.

UPDATE ❤️‍🔥 The Beading Circle has been cancelled. Please join us on Saturday, May 31 at 2 pm for the Opening Reception!

Charlotte Yao : “Let’s Go to America”

Curated by Steven Dragonn
Duration: May 24 – July 12, 2025
Opening reception: May 24, Saturday, 2-5pm
Venue: Canton-sardine, 071-268 Keefer st, Vancouver
Gallery hours: Weds-Sats 12-6pm

”Let’s Go to America” is inspired by a lie told by Charlotte’s paternal relatives when she was five years old, which led to her being taken away from her mother that night and sent to the home of another paternal relative in a different city. During this late-night journey, a random courtyard iron gate was pointed as the gateway to America, passing by in a flash.

Years later, Charlotte gradually realized the long-lasting impact of the trauma formed that night on her subsequent life. She searched online for various photos of courtyard iron gates and edited them, trying to recreate the fleeting “gateway to America” from that night. At the same time, she sifted through the archive of family photographs organized by her mother to seek for details and clues about that night. She revisited the city of her birth, wandering through locations that carried the fragmented memories of her childhood, and re-enacted that late-night journey. Through interwoven dialogues, memories, and field notes, the artist gradually unfolds an inquiry into the diasporic subjectivity.

As an immigrant, Charlotte’s family is a quintessential real-life example of what Jia Zhangke’s film Mountains May Depart (2015) depicts as the “Chinese-style triple jump”—from a small rural village in central China to a major Chinese metropolis, and then across the Pacific to North America. These leaps have shaped her unique perspective as both a woman and an artist, enabling her to develop a deep vertical understanding of Chinese society from its grassroots to the middle class, as well as a horizontal, cross-cultural awareness on a global scale. Drawing from this unspeakable experience, she delved into the intersections of gender through the lens of a diasporic Chinese woman.

In the exhibition Systems Shift, Valerie Durant presents work from several series that explore the boundaries between photographic image-making and sculpture. These pieces serve as an inquiry into material culture, consumption, and the interconnectedness of living systems, addressing themes of regeneration, ecological precarity, and the impact of human intervention on the natural world.

What, at first glance, looks like a simple cross-cut of a tree, is in fact a sculpture made from pulped paper shopping bags and photographs.

With this exhibition, Durant reflects on the tension between industrialised material use and the fragility of living systems. Durant’s practice interprets climate change as both a personal and collective call for reflection and transformation. Embedded in her identity as a mother and grandmother is a deep commitment to sustainability and intergenerational care—evident in her intentional reuse of organic and inorganic materials to minimise environmental impact for future generations.

The exhibition @this_______________________ closes on Saturday, May 17.
