Day 8 of the Filipino American History Month Bookstagram Tour! Being Fil-Am I’ve taken the last few years to delve a little deeper into my Filipino roots through storytelling especially having grown up in the Midwest where Filipinos were few and far between. And although I was raised in a small bubble of our culture and struggled with that part of my identity, I felt there was something missing. There was more. It wasn’t just heritage, it was also about history. It’s more than traditions, it’s how we adapt and survive, and Filipinos do an amazing job of just that through stories.

One of my favorite mythical creatures is the Tikbalang, a half-man, half-horse that evolved from this forest spirit to a way for us to shape our history today. I wrote It Waits in the Dark to not only explore parts of my own experiences growing up where I didn’t understand who I was but also the intersection of where food, family, and culture can heal someone.

Our stories aren’t trapped in the past, they’re just finding their way. What are your favorite Filipino folklore stories past and present?

Shoutout to @atemarcelareads__ and @filipinaauthorsbookclub for another amazing year of celebrating Fil-Am history and how we celebrate it as creators and artists. I’m also sharing today’s tour date with @glowsfavethings go check out her post about her own personal journey!

Just a reminder to read that book! It’s not hard to fall into a doomscroll. I was definitely guilty of this last night after a long day of adulting. Sometimes the easiest, most mindless thing to do is to watch my feed and let the screen do the work.

What are your guilty pleasures?

What an amazing event! This past weekend was the @nightfrightsla Horror Film Festival. I joined several talented writers from the Horror Writers Association to discuss psychological horror films from our favorite movies, what are the elements of thrillers and horror films, how we use writing to create anticipation, and so much more. I definitely have a few new movies to add to my watch list.

It took place at the Gardena Cinema which was a theater with a lot of nostalgic charm that only added to the experience. Check out the pre-panel highlights! What a great start to the spooky season.

What psychological thriller or horror film do you love?

Until next year!!!
