a few years ago when @richnotdick was about to run the tokyo marathon he told me he was excited to run in a race with mostly asian participants, we talked a bit about how rare that is and how special it would be. i’m not sure why that small convo stuck with me for so long but i do know how important it is to feel seen and how proud i felt running in my hometown race, the @honolulumarathon.

growing up i had ohana (some blood and some not) from hawaiian, filipino, japanese, korean, chinese, vietnamese, & spanish backgrounds to name a few. going from one of the most diverse places to college in a town with very little AAPI representation or culture was really hard for me. i remember taking out my nori freshman year for a snack and getting laughs and weird looks, little things like that made me feel like i had to tone down who i was to survive and succeed (especially when running and my health were at a low). i didn’t cook much asian food or share much about hawaiian culture. when people think of hawai’i they think of beautiful beaches and good weather, and of course i missed that, but there’s so much more to it as well. there’s rich culture, food, aloha and also tough truths like its history with US colonialism and issues that native hawaiians and locals face.

fast forward to now, living in seattle and finding my community here has really helped me to feel seen and proud of who i am again. i love y’all!! 🫶🏼 it also sometimes feels so silly to be spending my free time running around and traveling when my grandma did physical labor in agriculture fields until she was 75, but mostly i just try to be grateful. its a similar feeling of whiplash opening my phone and seeing what’s happening to today’s immigrants. i’ve had this in my drafts for a month now because it felt like oversharing, but it feels more important than ever to celebrate the people and places that feel safe and like home, so here’s to more of that, more diversity, more community and more love🫶🏼🌈 taken in Honolulu, Hawaii by @vanessaroybal_

this morning @4thegirlsjogclub Seattle we were treated to a Clifton Pro and Clifton 11 shoe demo, raffles & coffee on @hoka ✨ thanks so much @ben.crowell for coming out on an early, wet Seattle morning!
