Hello! My name is Saba Salekfard, and I’m the new Resident Director of the Neutra VDL House. I’m incredibly honored to be stepping into this role and into the stewardship of a place that has meant so much to me over the years.

My journey with the VDL began in 2015, when I was a student docent at Cal Poly Pomona @cpp_arc. After completing my graduate studies @yalearchitecture , I’m proud to be back in Los Angeles teaching, practicing, and returning to the House in this new capacity.

My partner, Mohammad Hossein Zowqi, will be joining me in many of the stewardship responsibilities of the House. Together, we’re committed to carrying forward the incredible legacy built by the VDL’s previous directors while developing new programming, partnerships, and opportunities for exchange.

We’re excited for this next chapter and look forward to welcoming you to the House!

This summer marks the end of my six years as Resident Director of the Neutra VDL House.

It has been an honor, and it's one that I never took lightly. My relationship with this house began as a student docent at Cal Poly Pomona, and returning to it as director, years later, felt like the opportunity of a lifetime. The VDL has always been more than a landmark. It is a place of ongoing cultural experimentation that proves a historic house stays alive through the people who use it and the ideas it continues to generate.

I'll never forget moving buckets around the living room during heavy rains to catch the drips from a failing roof, and the relief of filling the reflecting pool again after finally fixing it. Keeping the house open was its own form of preservation: waking up early every Saturday to clean, watching travelers peer through the curtain gaps before opening time, and hearing the gratitude of visitors finally stepping inside.

I'll remember students waking up to morning light through the Chinese Elm after spending the night during a workshop with Fernanda Canales. I'll remember visitors puzzled by the squiggly pink house numbers during Built In. Every residency, exhibition, workshop, and performance gave the house and its visitors new ways of seeing it. First and foremost, I am most grateful to Juhee Park, whose vision, support, and unseen labor made all of this possible. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the life of the house: collaborators, artists, architects, supporters, and visitors. I'm deeply grateful to Cal Poly Pomona's College of Environmental Design and Department of Architecture, and to Sarah Lorenzen, Lauren Bricker, Mary Anne Akers, and many others. I'm incredibly thankful to my students, whose dedication and curiosity were essential every week @cppenv

Installed in groupings that generally redefine the spaces that they inhabit, the objects of Leonor Antunes lie somewhere between immersive conclaves of abstracted entities and pieces of concrete poetry. - Douglas Fogle

For this sculptural intervention, Antunes chose to respond to both the history and the unique architectural environment of Richard Neutra’s Los Angeles home and workspace with a body of work inspired by three pioneering female designers: the Austrian émigré architect Elizabeth Scheu Close, the Cuban-born designer Clara Porset and the French designer Charlotte Perriand.

Intrigued by the formal qualities of the functional creations of a wide variety of modernist designers and architects, Antunes begins a conversation with these objects; her resulting works quietly radiate the aura of their sources while being substantively transformed into something else—something almost organic—despite their inert materiality.

This black-and-white image comes from Barbara Hepworth’s personal archive—a 1938 photo-collage in which she places her sculpture Two Segments in front of Richard Neutra’s original VDL House in Silver Lake.

The collage was later shown in Barbara Hepworth: Sculpture for a Modern World at Tate Britain. There’s no evidence the sculpture ever stood here, but the image shows how Hepworth used photography and architecture as active tools in her process. taken in Neutra VDL House by @vdlhouse

Curated by Douglas Fogle for the Neutra VDL Studio and Residences in Los Angeles, “Leonor Antunes: discrepancies with E.S. (in company)” engages with the modernist domestic spatial configurations of Richard Neutra’s iconic home and studio. Responding to the unique architectural environment of Neutra’s iconic Los Angeles home and workspace, Antunes has made a sculptural intervention into this mid-century modern icon with a new body of work inspired by the designs of the Austrian émigré architect Elizabeth (née Scheu) Close (1912-2011), an MIT-trained architect who brought modernist design to Minneapolis and whose family was part of the same Viennese social circles as the Neutras.

This project has been made possible by the generous support of Chara Schreyer. Additional support has been provided by Marian Goodman Gallery, and kurimanzutto, Mexico City/New York.
