The XX is one of our favorite offerings from Seven Cycles. Light without compromise, durable and balanced. The XX platform offers an internal routing option that delivers a modern aesthetic. Like all Seven custom offerings, the ability to tune the frame and its many aspects is deeply specific to each rider. For this XX, the internal cable aesthetics didn’t outweigh the future benefits of the external option. Simple, adjustable and travel friendly. #velosmithbuilds

At Velosmith, we overthink things. Our approach to custom bicycles is intentional, methodical and thorough. We are fortunate that our designer’s approach is similar. When brainstorming designs, @studiolalonde came up with the “tool board” graphic. Founded on our centrally located frame prep tool board, the elements feature a mix of current and traditional shop tools. A nod to our decades of experience spanning a wide range of bicycle materials and technology. The eye located at the center speaks to our eye for detail and how important the often unnoticed elements are. #velosmithbuilds

A custom wheel build is a Velosmith calling card. True, round and properly tensioned. These elements ensure longevity and deliver a great riding experience. #velosmithbuilds

The Chris King T47 is a trait of the XX platform. Seven’s CNC machine ensures that the bearings sit squarely to one another and the bottom bracket cups thread in smoothly. The T47 shell also provides an enclosed path for the rear brake line. #velosmithbuilds

Back in 2001, I purchased my first, new Campagnolo group set. It was 10 speed Record and my introduction to Campagnolo’s thumb shifter. Coming from Shimano Dura-Ace it was an adjustment. The thumb shifter felt awkward and required me to slightly reposition my hand on the hood whenever downshifting. Over time, the feel of the Camapgnolo hood and that funky thumb shifter became second nature and the solid clunk of a down shift was incredible - tactile, authentic and decisive. Maybe the better word is definitive. Over. The years, Campagnolo refined their levers, hood shapes and ergonomics. With each iteration the levers improved but the shift logic and that solid feel remained. One lever, one function (brake, shift up, shift down). When Campagnolo released their first generation wireless electronic shifting system, the thumb shifter was gone. At first glance the levers looked vaguely familiar yet completely foreign. Needless to say, we were not impressed. When Campagnolo announced a Gen II electronic shifting system we were intrigued but approached with caution. We dug in, asked questions and sought feedback from those who had experience and whose work we admired whose expertise we trusted. Folks like @cutlassvelo, @swell_shifts, @brickellbikes, @provisioncycling and @parleecycles. Finally, we felt it was time for us to invest in a Super Record (X) group, test it and form our own opinions. From the mechanic’s bench to the trails, so far it has proven to be exceptional. We’ve been a bit quiet on the IG front lately. The season has been in full swing and we’ve been full gas. But a recent evaluation build and subsequent miles has us excited to post. Campagnolo has been working overtime to revamp their electronic offerings and it shows. Their mechanical, rim brake offerings remain a staple for Velosmith, allowing us to upgrade older platforms for riders who love their existing bikes. But when it came to 2x or 1x electronic drivetrains, the conversations rarely focused on Campagnolo. Enter the latest offerings from the crew in Vicenza. Their clean sheet rebuild of the electronic offerings made it time to dig back in and look closely. Super Record, Super Record X, Record and Record X all exhibit the Campagnolo energy of earlier eras. Campagnolo has always been different, borderline esoteric but in the most charming way. No bicycle drivetrain has won hearts and minds the way Campagnolo has. No drivetrain delivered an aesthetic like Campagnolo and no drivetrain has aged as gracefully as a Campy build. We will dig into this recent build, our thoughts and the specs in a future post. For now, here are some shots following a handful of mixed terrain rides. Seven XX, Titanium Road. The XX platform is nothing shy of amazing. XX is Seven’s most technical model with a host of weight saving, hot rod elements paired with a hyper butted tubeset. The crew at Seven dug deep to build the ultimate full titanium frame. Sophisticated tube butting profiles provide the crew at Seven with the tools to deliver the ideal ride for each owner. What does that mean? It means different things to different riders of course. But to Seven it means that when a rider seeks a stiff, performance-first platform, they can deliver. When compliance and comfort is the primary wish, Seven can deliver. And for those who want a balanced ride ideal for a wide range of conditions, Seven can deliver.
