THRILLED TO PRESENT A ONE NIGHT ONLY PHOTO EXHIBITION AT LOPEZ

Standing at the opposite end of my digital work, rooted in colorful compositions and meticulous editing, DISCOMBOBULATED explores its raw counterpart. An almost-thought-out, non-linear, semi-organized curation of my film archives.

"There are more bands than there has ever been, but there's also more people at these shows than I think have ever been," she observes, while performance spaces like La Tulipe wake people up to what's at stake. ⁠

As both a photographer and musician herself, Cormier documents her community from a unique perspective. Her photos preserve a scene that thrives creatively even as provincial arts funding shrinks and DIY spaces disappear—a visual chronicle of Montreal's musical persistence against the odds. ⁠

"It's not so much that the music is dying; it's that the city is making it a lot harder for music to exist," she explains. ⁠

I have known Susan for 10 years. When I picked up a camera as a teenager she taught me everything I’d need to know to shoot. Never below 1/250. Countless days spent sitting in her living room petting her cat and figuring out how to use Lightroom. How to behave in the pit. She brought me along when she could. We’d go on these long photowalks in the Plateau. She gave me my first prime lenses. I’ve looked up to her ever since I’ve started. All I ever wanted was to shoot shows like her. When I got in my first photo pits she was always there. Looking at me like a proud bitchy older sister. Shooting alongside her made it all less intimidating. She would never hesitate to say how proud of me she was, outside the venue holding a cigarette and her camera in the same hand. Every time I pick up a camera I think of her.

When I learned the news yesterday I was right about to shoot a band. It felt so strange to do this thing she had shown me knowing she would never see any more of it. I picked up my camera and cried. And then I shot the fuck out of that band because that’s what Susan would’ve wanted.

She would hate that I’m saying all this. She would say that I did it all by myself. That the student far surpassed the teacher. But I wouldn’t be where I am without Susan. Montreal couldn’t have asked for a better concert photographer. I couldn’t have asked for a better mentor. I couldn’t have asked for a better friend in this industry.

This is a photo I took on one of our first photo walks in 2016.
