‘Beneath the Shimmering it’s Dark Blue’ in @theaterrotterdam

‘Beneath the shimmering it's dark blue' explores through painting and video how structural violence since the Cold War have influenced (inner) worlds. The two painted banners are inspired by a study of (Western) imperialist propaganda images from the Cold War until now and the visual language of several anti-colonial counter-movements, such as the Organization of Solidarity of the Peoples of Asia, Africa and Latin America (OSPAAAL). The focus of this research is on questioning dominant narratives and how this has shaped people's imaginations, dreams, emotions and world view. Moving on the border between past - present, subjective - objective, personal - societal, this project analyzes contemporary society with an interest in inner experiences haunted by a violent past.

Wat is nu enger dan de huidige politiek? Met Halloween in het vooruitzicht kun je zondag 18 oktober deelnemen aan ‘Draag je hart op je …Patchwork workshop’ van kunstenaar Vera Kersting.

Via patchworktechnieken, borduren en schilderen met textielverf krijgt je stem een beeld, die je kunt dragen op kleding, tassen, vlaggen, noem het maar op. Ook wordt besproken hoe visuele taal een krachtig middel is om je mening zichtbaar te maken en een nieuwe realiteit te verbeelden.

Neem je eigen kledingstuk mee, zodat je je patchwork er direct op kunt dragen. Geen kledingstuk mee? Geen probleem! Je kunt het ontwerp ook achteraf ergens aan vastmaken.

Wanneer: zondag 18 oktober
Tijd: 13:00 – 16:00 uur

Ink drawing sale Fundraiser for Kalimantan
(Open donasi penjualan sketsa untuk Kalimantan)

@swaraowa , in collaboration with @yayasan_palung , is launching a fundraising campaign through the sale of ink drawings created by Vera Kersting or a digital sketch by @donisingo . (SwaraOwa bekerja sama dengan Yayasan Palung membuka donasi terbuka melalui penjualan sketsa yang dikerjakan oleh Doni Singadikrama dan Vera Kersting.)

- Providing masks and vitamins (Pengadaan masker dan vitamin).
- Providing equipment and supplies for local residents to digging wells and access water sources for firefighting efforts (Pengadaan sarana-prasarana warga lokal dalam penggalian sumur guna mendapatkan sumber untuk kegiatan pemadaman api)

SwaraOwa @swaraowa (2014) is a conservation group focused on protecting Indonesia’s primates, particularly gibbons, and their natural habitats. They combine applied research, conservation education, and the development of sustainable livelihoods with communities living around primate habitats.

Yayasan Palung @yayasan_palung (1999) focuses on orangutan and forest conservation, as well as the protection of forests and biodiversity across the Gunung Palung National Park landscape in West Kalimantan. In addition to wildlife research and rescue, Yayasan Palung conducts environmental education with forest communities to help protect their habitats and forests sustainably.

Gastrogeografía: “Historias de México a Singapur”

Una extensa investigación 📚 sobre las botanas de ambas regiones. A partir de examinar libros de cocina, revistas populares, envases de comida, anuncios y otros materiales impresos, desmenuzamos historias paralelas que existen entre Singapur y México, en particular sus complejas relaciones con el legado colonial y el sincretismo culinario.

Este proyecto integra pinturas, platos 🍲 🍽️ esculturas, manteles y otros materiales impresos, junto con contenido de vídeo que fusiona la gastronomía con las mitologías de ambos lugares 🇸🇬🇲🇽

🇳🇱 Tijdens de installatie van deze tentoonstelling braken in Indonesië massale protesten uit voor hogere lonen en tegen misbruik van overheidsgeld. Tien demonstranten verloren hun leven, tientallen werden vermist, waaronder Affan Kurniawan, een jonge motorrijder die het eerste dodelijke slachtoffer werd. In solidariteit ontwierp kunstenaar Vera Kersting een muurschildering als eerbetoon aan de arbeiders die stierven voor een betere toekomst. Ondanks de verschuiving naar informeel werk en staatsrepressie blijven Indonesische arbeiders zich verenigen en strijden voor hun rechten.

Vera Kersting onderzoekt in haar schilderijen de spanningen tussen mediabeelden, digitale en fysieke landschappen, en de absurditeit van het dagelijks leven. Haar werk onthult verborgen conflicten en speelt met grenzen – tussen verleden en heden, fictie en realiteit – terwijl lagen, technieken en materialen telkens nieuwe toegang tot ruimten en betekenissen openen.

Deze tentoonstelling eert hun moed en nodigt het publiek uit stil te staan bij solidariteit en de prijs van onrecht. Afgelopen zaterdag was de laatste dag van de expositie.

🇬🇧 During the installation of this exhibition, mass protests erupted in Indonesia demanding higher wages and accountability for the misuse of public funds. Ten demonstrators lost their lives, and dozens went missing, including Affan Kurniawan, a young motorcyclist who became the first fatality. In solidarity, artist Vera Kersting created a mural to honor the workers who died striving for a better future. Despite the shift toward informal labor and state repression, Indonesian workers continue to organize and fight for their rights.

In her paintings, Vera Kersting explores the tensions between media images, digital and physical landscapes, and the absurdity of everyday life. Her work reveals hidden conflicts and plays with boundaries—between past and present, fiction and reality—while layers, techniques, and materials open up new spaces and meanings for the viewer.

This exhibition honours their courage and invites the public to reflect on solidarity and the price of injustice. Last Saturday was the final day of the exhibition. taken in CBK Zuidoost by @verakersting
