Why don’t vegans eat eggs from backyard hens? šŸ„ššŸ³šŸ“

Veganism is not a diet - it’s a moral principle. It’s the belief that it’s not appropriate to use, exploit and consume animals, or anything that comes from their bodies.

I don’t see hens or eggs as food - in the same way most people wouldn’t eat something from a dog or a cat…

Veganism just extends that same respect to ALL animals.

And if someone you know has backyard hens, one of the kindest things they can do is feed the eggs back to them. It takes a huge amount of energy and nutrients to lay an egg - and hens can regain that by eating them.

Hens are the only ones who actually need their eggs šŸ“šŸ’š

Thank you to @millingtonsmagicalbarn for sharing this gorgeous footage of the hens they’ve rescued, and for being a perfect example of how hens should be treated.

Jake & Rosie are both vegan and have over 100 animals in their care, rescued from abuse, neglect or slaughter. Please follow and support them in any way you can! šŸ’š

My thoughts on International Women’s Day šŸ’š

Can we truly call ourselves feminist if we support a system built on the exploitation of the female body?

Did you know this? Please check your coconut products before buying! šŸ’šŸ„„šŸŒ“

Monkeys can be forced to pick up to 1,000 coconuts a day. This is yet another example of humans exploiting other animals for our own convenience and profit, treating living, feeling individuals as tools for our benefit.

@peta conducted multiple investigations across Thailand’s major coconut-producing regions and found that the existing certification scheme cannot reliably guarantee that coconut milk from Thailand is ā€˜monkey-free’.

Investigators found monkeys being exploited at farms certified as ā€˜monkey-free’. Infrequent, pre-announced inspections make it easier for farms to conceal monkey labour without being held accountable.

PETA’s investigations have linked several well-known brands to monkey exploitation, including Aroy-D, Chaokoh, Blue Dragon, KTC, Amoy and Natco.

Although PETA’s investigations have focused on Thailand, monkeys have also been used to harvest coconuts in other parts of Southeast Asia.

Look for products sourced from countries where monkeys are not used to harvest coconuts, such as Brazil, Colombia or Sri Lanka. A certificate or a brand’s own assurances alone aren’t necessarily proof that monkeys haven’t been exploited.

This will never end until we stop viewing animals as ā€˜ours’ and ā€˜something’ to use and exploit.

How many did you already know? ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹

1. 70% of antibiotics used globally are given to farmed animals. And antibiotic resistance is rising drastically because of this. (See my recent reel for more info)

2. Pregnant horses are exploited for their blood. Mares are kept on ā€˜blood farms’ where a hormone extracted from their blood is used to manipulate reproduction in farmed animals. (See my recent reel for more info)

3. 2,700 land animals & 32,000 fish are killed every second around the world for food. EVERY SECOND.

All of the above happens because we see animals as ours to use and exploit.

Did you know this? šŸ˜³šŸ’Šāš ļø

70% of antibiotics used globally are given to the animals we exploitā€¼ļø

Antibiotics are routinely used to prevent and treat disease on farms.

Their overuse is contributing to antibiotic resistance - making infections harder to treat and putting human health at risk.

Scientists predict that by 2050, antibiotic resistance could be responsible for 1.91 million deaths every year, with a further 8.22 million deaths associated with it.

And yet, most people are completely unaware. All of this suffering and exploitation, alongside a growing threat to our health…

When we could just stop using animals and choose plants instead.

Things that seem normal… until you go vegan šŸ‘€šŸŒ± Part 12 (not 11 oops)

Selectively breeding animals to change their bodies for our benefit.

🄚Hens would naturally lay around 10-15 eggs a year. But selective breeding has pushed that to more than 300 eggs in their first year of life.
šŸ“ Broiler chickens have been bred to grow 4x faster, making them unable to walk and even causing their legs to break and organ failure.
šŸ„ Dairy cows have been bred to produce more milk than their bodies can sustain, contributing to problems like mastitis, infertility and lameness.

And it isn’t just farmed animals…

šŸ• Dogs, cats and horses have all been selectively bred for human preferences like appearance, speed and size, resulting in serious health problems for many of them.

These are just a few examples of how we’ve manipulated and exploited animals’ bodies to make them more useful to us.

The problem isn’t only what this does to them - it’s that we see them as ours to use in the first place.

I have so many more of these so let me know if you want a part 13.

It’s 2026 can we all agree that vegans don’t have protein deficiencies yet? 🌱

It’s one of the most common misconceptions I still hear, so here’s a breakdown of the protein sources in this dish:

• Lentil Pasta: 17g protein per 100g
• Peas: 5.7g protein per 100g
•Tempeh: 22g protein per 100g
•Pumpkin seeds: 24g protein per 100g
•Sunflower seeds: 20g protein per 100g
•Silken tofu: 7g protein per 100g
•Cashews: 18g protein per 100g
•Nutritional yeast: 47g protein per 100g

That’s 8 plant based protein sources, totalling around 145g of protein in the full recipe and almost 50g per serving!

Pasta sauce:
50g wild garlic
50g toasted cashews
40g nutritional yeast
20g rocket
250g peas
1 garlic clove
100g silken tofu
Salt and pepper (to taste)
½ lemon juice
25ml olive oil
1 vegetable stock cube
100ml pasta water

This pasta sauce was inspired by and adapted from @bosh.tv rocket, pea and pistachio pesto linguine - a recipe from their new cookbook ā€˜More Plants’ which I highly recommend for anyone looking to eat more plant protein and fibre!

Tempeh:
1 block tempeh
1/4 cup pumpkin & sunflower seeds
1 tbsp olive oil
1 tsp maple syrup
1 tbsp soy sauce
1 tbsp nutritional yeast
1 tsp smoked paprika
1 tsp garlic granules
Pinch of salt & pepper

Method:
1. Prep and blend all the pasta sauce ingredients, adding pasta water once the pasta is cooked
2. Cook the pasta (I used a pack of @allplants plants 215g red lentil pasta for 3 portions but you could use about 280g if you wanted to serve 4)
3. Chop, season and air fry the tempeh & seeds at 200°C for 8-10 mins
4. Stir the sauce through the pasta and heat gently
5. Plate everything up and enjoy!

3 unpopular opinions from a vegan šŸ‘€

1. Being vegan is the bare minimum.

It’s basic human decency. There isn’t a justification for choosing to exploit animals.

2. We need to stop talking about veganism as if it’s a diet. I have focused too much on the food element in the past. I still share plant-based recipes online, but I’m much more conscious now of not reducing veganism to what I eat, when it’s about so much more than that.

When you are vegan you don’t see animals as ā€˜something’ to use. This includes using them for experiments, sports, entertainment, clothing, transport, furniture and of course food.

3. I don’t think feminism should stop at our own species.

If you aren’t vegan, you’re supporting industries that rely on the exploitation of the reproductive system and the removal of animals bodily autonomy. I extend my feminism to all species because I don’t believe anyone should be exploited.

I went vegan 9 years ago, and something people always say to me is:

ā€œI only eat organic, grass-fed, local animals.ā€

These are marketing terms designed to make us feel more comfortable with a system built on using animals.

We have been taught to see animals as ā€˜products’. As ā€˜something’ we can own, use and kill -
as long as we do it the ā€œrightā€ way.

But it doesn’t matter if they lived outside. It doesn’t matter if they ate grass. It doesn’t matter if they were raised down the road.

They were still someone who wanted to live.

The problem isn’t just how we use animals. The problem is believing we are entitled to use them at all.

Leave animals alone and stop using them for food, clothing, experiments, entertainment, transport etc.
