I’m currently in Bologna on a research trip where I’m attending a festival of children’s theatre, thanks to a YPCE bursary from @artscouncilireland. On one of my quieter days this week, I jumped on a train to Padova to realise a lifelong dream of seeing Giotto’s frescos and celestial blue ceiling at the Scrovegni Chapel. Giotto’s Massacre of the Innocents and The Flight Into Egypt frescoes are especially affecting when viewed today, in the middle of all-out genocide and forced displacement being committed by the Zionist regime against the people of occupied Palestine with unlimited munitions and full financial backing of the USA. I woke up in the middle of the night last night and couldn’t get back to sleep so I started Wikipedia-hopping, initially just wanting to learn more about King Herod and after much scrolling, ended up trying to ‘Street View’ the offices of an organisation in Greenwich, London located between ‘Dreadnought Walk’ and a block of apartments called ‘Empire Reach’ where an ancient Palestinian mask from 9000 BCE is kept. This organisation is a 20 minute walk from the Greenwich Meridian, the invisible line that separates east from west.

Ramah/Rama/al-Ram: al-Ram is a Palestinian town which lies northeast of occupied East Jerusalem. In 1517, the village became part of the Ottoman Empire along with the rest of Palestine. In the 1596 tax records, it appeared as Rama, located in the Nahiya of Jabal Quds of the Liwa of Al-Quds. Since the Six-Day War in 1967, al-Ram has been under Israeli occupation. The consequences of the creation of these fragmented Palestinian bantustans have been studied widely, and have been shown to have had a “devastating impact on the economy, social networks, [and] the provision of basic services such as healthcare and education”.

1) In August 2020, I travelled home to Galway to report to the Gardaí that back when I was 15 and 16, a local theatre director (a 28 year old man) groomed and sexually abused me over the course of a year after casting me in what turned out to be a highly sexualised role in a production he was directing. Before giving my statement, I had stayed in bed for a full week with nothing but a notebook and a pen, going further and further back into my memories and recalling granular details from every encounter I had with this man in order to build a clear timeline of the abuse. I spent 11 gruelling hours alone in a room with two guards recounting these experiences. They opened a child sexual abuse investigation and spent a year collecting further witness statements from my old friends, my family, my school, and other people in my community. It was scary and I felt so vulnerable but I knew I had to do it.
In late 2021 -over a year later- the guards finally made contact with him, inviting him to be questioned. He enlisted the same solicitor who defended one of Ana Kriegel’s murderers to represent him. Together, they ignored and stalled on the detective’s repeated requests for him to be questioned until July ‘22 when together, the pair of them presented for questioning where he answered “no comment'' to all allegations put to him, apart from admitting to kissing me ‘once’.

During St. Paddy’s weekend of this year I received a call from the guards letting me know that the Director of Public Prosecutions had decided that there was not enough evidence to prosecute. The guards were floored by the decision and had been “80% sure” that we would go to trial via the Central Criminal Court due to the seriousness of the allegations, along with the strength of the witness statements/book of evidence. I was utterly devastated and broke down once the reality set in. I wrote to the DPP to request their reasons, and when those landed, I wrote again and requested an appeal of the decision. That too came back as “sorry, not enough evidence.” (continued in the comments >>) by @vickylangan

Storm Therese slammed into the Canary Islands this week and with it, my plans to hike and stargaze alone in inland Gran Canaria were scuppered. On seeing the news reports of landslides, flash flooding and collapsed infrastructure, I set aside my new/still untouched 2-litre ‘hydration bladder’ and made a swift decision to get acquainted with the uniquely volcanic/mineral wines of the Canary Islands instead. The local indoor market just down the road from my old-town guesthouse had a stall in it wholly dedicated to Canarian wines (@canary.wine), and it was there -just killing time while my room was being made up- that I got talking to the amazing Chaxiraxi Triana, who, every lunchtime, guided me through mindblowing glasses of mineral, volcanic, saline beauty, all produced on these islands. Visiting Chaxi and spending time with these wines was the highlight of my holiday, which also included a good dose of sea swimming, taking the guaguas around the coast, and living off tropical fruit, Cuban tostones, gambas, and jamón ibérico.

Favourites💘: @canary.wine, Senegalese restaurant @le_walo, the cheesemonger at @aragueme who introduced me to the Galician @airasmoniz Savel cheese as well as lots of really memorable Canarian cheeses, and an unforgettable neighbourhood bar @los_jamones_isleta where locals laughed and kissed each other and a kind man beat his chest, declaring that I had ‘INTERIORITY!!” after learning that I was on holiday alone. I walked in the green hills of Agaete and was so lucky to see coffee flowers bloom (🥲), breathed in the jasmine-like scent of orange blossoms on the breeze, and was just so genuinely surprised at how hugely climatically diverse (and calm and relaxed) Gran Canaria is. Springtime was the perfect time to experience this beautiful place. It was my grandmother’s favourite place to go on holiday to, and I thought of her every day while I was here.
