Tomorrow marks one year since you left us. You took your last breath surrounded by the women in the family, holding your hands as tightly as we could & soothing you as best we could. We are convinced you waited for the men to leave the room, your final choice and act of independence. Your death was prolonged, unfair & painful but you navigated it with such strength and courage. As you did with every challenge life presented you with.
Lately, I’ve been reflecting on the things you taught me: the importance of family and community, the necessity of animals in a home, forgiveness and empathy, the importance of adding dates to the back of photographs, the value of trying new things and having a strong work ethic, and the joy of long daily phone calls with friends (I use voice notes). You taught me that a cup of tea or tea tree oil can solve almost everything, to always help others, how to butter bread properly (right to the corners), how to sew, how to bake and how to make a pretty decent omelette (or scrambled eggs when it doesn’t work out). You did, unfortunately, forget to teach me how to live without you.
I miss you so much. Someone told me that you’ll never really be gone because I talk about you almost every day. Someone else told me I am your legacy. I’m trying to make you proud. Although I know you wouldn’t have approved of me & Mom’s matching tattoos but maybe the sentiment would have outweighed the disapproval:) by @vickysadventures
