A WORK FROM HEART — JUANITA DÍAZ TORRES

When I chose this work for HEART, I kept thinking about the women whose experiences of violence remain unheard. In many parts of the world, reporting violence against women is still difficult, and speaking openly about it is not always socially accepted. Their suffering often remains invisible.

This is why the work of artists like Juanita Díaz Torres matters so much to me. Through her art and her foundation, she helps bring attention to these injustices and supports women who have experienced violence.

There is something deeply powerful about the small acts through which a woman begins to reclaim her life. Putting on lipstick again. Taking care of her hair. Stepping outside. Allowing herself to be seen.

These gestures may seem ordinary, but to me, they can represent something much bigger: taking back control, finding strength, and refusing to disappear.

That is what this work means to me. Not simply recovery, but the beginning of reclaiming one’s own life.

Juanita, thank you for the work you do, for the women you support, and for reminding us that even the smallest gestures can carry enormous strength. ❤️

THANK YOU.

HEART happened because of the people who made it happen.

Thank you to the artists, everyone who helped along the way, and everyone who came by, spent time with us, looked, listened and connected.

I’m taking a lot of beautiful memories from Milan with me. ❤️

Gregor Hildebrandt

There are artists who have been on your wish list for so long that, somehow, you never quite manage to ask them.

Gregor was one of those artists for me. He had been on my HEART wish list from the very beginning, but I kept postponing it. I’m a huge fan, and for some reason, I just couldn’t quite figure out how to approach him.
Luckily, fate had other plans.

We happened to be standing next to each other at an opening at the Neue Nationalgalerie. After a glass of wine, I finally gathered the courage to simply ask him. And Gregor was so wonderfully easy about it. He immediately had a work in mind.

And et voilà. ❤️

Gregor’s artistic practice has fascinated me for a long time. He takes materials we associate with listening, watching and remembering — cassette tapes, video tapes and vinyl records — and gives them an entirely different life as paintings, sculptures and installations.
Music is often physically present in his works, even when we cannot hear a single note. The recordings become part of the material itself, leaving behind traces of songs, films and personal associations. What initially appears to be a restrained abstract composition can hold an entire world of memories and references.
I love this tension between the seemingly minimal and the deeply personal. Between what is visible and what remains hidden. Between the physical presence of a material and everything it once carried.

And perhaps that is what makes his work so special to me: you don’t need to know every reference to feel that there is something more beneath the surface. The work leaves room for your own memories to enter.

Gregor, thank you for making it so easy for a very excited fangirl to finally ask. I couldn’t be happier that you said yes — and that one of your works is now becoming part of HEART in Milan. ❤️

Finja Sander

I’ve known Finja since she was still a student at the @udkberlin, when she was showing some of her very first performances. I remember being drawn to her work early on — and somewhere along the way, our professional relationship turned into a friendship.

I later had the pleasure of showing her work at @colorado_projects in Leipzig. And then came another milestone: Finja became the first artist whose performance Galerie @jochenhempel ever presented at an art fair — at ARCO Madrid. A big step for us back then, and one that required a great deal of trust on both sides.

For HEART, Finja will perform a piece from her sculptural series “passiv agressiv” throughout the evening on Oct 3rd.

Finja’s practice moves between performance, photography and sculpture. She works with her own body, physical force and machinery to investigate how social structures and collective identities are formed. Questions of verticality and horizontality run through her work — not simply as formal configurations, but as ways of organizing power, hierarchy and relationships between individuals and communities.
Her works often engage with existing architecture, historical imagery and forms of collective remembrance. She draws connections between seemingly distant references, from memorial culture to popular imagery, asking how historical narratives continue to shape the way we see ourselves and the world around us.

What I find particularly compelling is how she translates these rather complex questions into something immediate and physical. The body becomes both an instrument and a site of negotiation: something that acts, resists, carries memory and is shaped by forces beyond itself. There is a tension between strength and vulnerability, between individual agency and the structures we are part of.

For me, this is also where her work meets the idea of HEART: not sentiment, but something that is active, physical and constantly at work.
Finja, I have enormous trust in you and deep admiration for what you do. It means a lot to me to have accompanied your journey from those early performances at the UdK to where you are today — and to bring PASSIV AGRESSIV to Milan. ❤️ taken in Settala29 show-room by @vickywang.art

Alwin Lay

I met Alwin through my close friendship with Robby from KÖNIG2. It was during an art fair, and somehow we all ended up going out together in the evening.

That’s how it started — quite casually, over drinks and conversations. And I remember being struck by Alwin’s incredible lightness. There was something very easy and effortless about him, while his work is the complete opposite of careless.

Alwin works with photography, video, installation and sculpture, often starting with something very ordinary: an everyday object, something we normally wouldn’t give a second thought. He then carefully stages and transforms it, introducing small shifts, unexpected details or situations that seem almost impossible. The result can look completely believable at first — until something doesn’t quite add up.

And that is what I love about his work. Everything feels incredibly precise, but never stiff. There is humour, playfulness and a certain absurdity in it. You look, you recognise something familiar, and then it no longer behaves quite the way you expect it to. A small gap opens up between what you see and what you thought would happen. Alwin never really fills that gap for you. Instead, he leaves it open — for you to question your own expectations of things, their purpose, and the way they are supposed to work.

I think that combination of precision and lightness is also what makes spending time with Alwin so enjoyable. His work can be very clever without ever feeling heavy.

Alwin, I’m very happy that one of those spontaneous evenings through Robby found its way into this exhibition — and that your work is now coming to Milan. ❤️

Christian Achenbach

Some people become part of your life almost without you noticing it. Christian is one of those people for me.

We’ve known each other for many years now, and somewhere along the way, our relationship became a friendship. I’ve had the pleasure of following his career for a long time — from his earlier works to where he is today — and it’s been really special to see how his work has developed along the way.

Christian has his studio on the grounds of Jonas Burgert’s studio in Weißensee, a place that has become quite well known through different exhibition formats over the years. It has always felt like a very particular little world within Berlin — and one I’ve enjoyed being part of from time to time.

What I love about Christian’s paintings is their energy. Colour, rhythm and movement seem to constantly push against each other. Landscapes, plants and organic forms appear, dissolve and reassemble, creating spaces that feel somewhere between a real place and a completely imagined one. There is a strong connection to music in his work, too — you can almost feel the rhythm and improvisation in the way the paintings come together.

And then there is Gin Tonic. One of Christian’s works in our private collection happens to carry the name of my favourite drink. Anyone who knows me will understand why that felt like a very good reason to take it home. 😉🍸

Christian, I’m very happy that I’ve been able to accompany your work for so many years — and even happier that somewhere along the way, you became a friend. ❤️
