I witnessed something special on Sunday. Real lives being changed through the exchange of skills, energy and knowledge. A handing down of forever tools, once learned by giants, our elders. Wisdom that, for one reason or another, has almost slipped away from this generation, yet refuses to be lost.

A present day transformation that felt monumental, realised through practice, patience and care.

I witnessed euphoric soundsystems in their final form, weighted, measured, and carefully carved frequencies. I witnessed people choosing to build and imagine.

I witnessed Hoodfutures.

Jaz at Spaghetti junction

Jaz felt she had truly arrived in Birmingham. An underrated under passing that would be considered antisocial yet is actually an effervescent shield blocking all noise from up above.

A special moment shared about time, experience and space. The Spaghetti Junction is Birmingham’s roads tangled connecting each pathway to another town.

Spit Game | We Move FWD

I had an incredible time photographing and seeing how the new generation carry themselves, who is advocating for their learning and pushing for creativity to be apart of their daily lives. Truly inspiring to witness this. All I can say is that it feels like we’re in good hands with the next gen.

A part of my journey was shaped by the immigration process and the brave steps my incredible parents took to find a country safe and stable enough to raise me and my siblings.

Living in South East London in the early 2000’s was a short part of the journey. While we were there, my mum dressed me and my brother up and walked us through Notting Hill Carnival. All I remember is copious amounts of joy and vague flashes of colour.

Now, years later, I find myself returning, this time to experience and witness a place that gave my family pieces of joy in a foreign world. The unconscious memory keeps surprising me, now helping me understand what I was really witnessing as a child.
