Ever been mid-conversation and the other person glances at their phone?

You feel it.

That little flick of “you’re not that important right now.”

It’s mad how a tiny action can say SO much.

We might not say it out loud, but we definitely feel it.

Phones are brilliant but they’re also a total connection killer when we’re not aware.

Being fully present isn’t old-fashioned.

In today’s world - it’s actually a superpower.

So next time you’re with someone, just be with them.

Look up. Listen. Connect.

It matters more than you think ❤️

Thank you for being present for me 🫶🏼

🤷🏻‍♀️If your business isn’t tapping into the HUMAN behind the “role”… you’re leaving talent, engagement AND profit on the table.

Are you doing these 👇🏼👇🏼 … how do you test it to see if it’s REALLY working - and I don’t mean staff surveys, they don’t go deep enough (in my opinion)

🙌🏼 Translate emotional intelligence into stronger client relationships?
🙌🏼 Turn behavioural awareness into sustainable team performance?
🙌🏼 Build culture where people feel seen, safe AND valued - that then deliver results?

This is not soft-skills “fluff” this is real business.

👑 Ready to turn behaviours into bottom-line impact? Let’s talk.

Thank you to the ever so talented @loonarcreative for the latest Queen showreel.

Thought your Vaping only impacted YOU?

Thought your horn blowing in the car was to release tension for YOU ?

Ever put YOUR phone on the table when sitting down with others?

Have you ever considered what it’s like to be on the receiving end of YOU?

Honoured to have taken the red circle 🔴 at TEDxGuildford earlier this month to give my thoughts.

Change the narrative, pause before you react.

There are many I could tag to thank for my journey to this moment but we all know what it’s like to be on the receiving of a tag on any social media platform that feels more like a self promotion for the other person, so I shall refrain.

Why does everything always come back to me?

Why can’t my team just make a decision?

Why won’t anyone take responsibility?

Sound familiar?

Here’s the uncomfortable bit…

You delegate something. They take it on. They get the result you wanted.

But they didn’t do it the way YOU would have done it.

So you step back in. Tweak it. Redo it. Take it back.

And then wonder why nobody takes ownership.

In this week’s It Starts With YOU, I’m talking about delegation, responsibility and knowing when to set the standard and when to just simply let go.

There’s also quite a lot of dishwasher chat. Obviously.

Have a listen and then tell me: are you guilty of taking things back when they’re not done your way?

And more importantly… are you a dishwasher reloader too? by @vicofarrell

How often do we react to something that hasn’t actually happened?

Someone sends an email.
They don’t reply.
They use a slightly different tone.
They say something that doesn’t quite sit right.

And off we go.

We fill in ALL the gaps.

We make assumptions based on our own experiences, decide what the other person meant and suddenly we’ve gone from A to sodding Z before they’ve even had a chance to explain themselves.

This is why I talk so much about the power of the micro moment.

That tiny bit of space between what happens and how you respond to it.

In this week’s episode, David Parr talks about something brilliantly simple he’s learned to do when his emotions are running high: name the feeling.

“I am furious right now.”

Then hold it.

Don’t go straight back in.

Because you can feel angry without immediately behaving from anger.

And sometimes that tiny pause changes what happens next.

How good are you at taking that micro moment before you react?

It’s not always about how much you spend.

Sometimes it’s a coffee. A biscuit. A taxi home.

In this week’s episode, David Parr shared this story about Rory Sutherland sending his daughters Uber vouchers while they were away at university.

Not because they couldn’t afford a taxi.

Because he wanted them to spend their last £10 having fun with their friends, while still knowing they could get home safely.

And THAT is the bit that matters.

The £20 isn’t really the gift. It’s the message behind it.

“I’m thinking about you.”
“I want you to be safe.”
“You matter to me.”

As David says, a gift at the right time can have limitless emotional value, way beyond its economic value.

And I think we sometimes underestimate just how powerful those tiny moments of human connection can be.

What’s a small gesture someone has made for you that you’ve never forgotten?

Being nice is more powerful than you think.

And this week’s guest has built a business around proving it.

I’m joined by my old friend David Parr, co-founder of @my.prsnt to talk about generosity, human connection and what happens when we make doing something nice for another person ridiculously easy.

We also get into his experience on Dragon’s Den, why our brains are very good at filling in the gaps (usually with the worst possible scenario), the power of taking a micro moment before reacting, and why one piece of real evidence is worth far more than months spent thinking about a great idea.

There are some brilliant stories in this one and a few lessons about human behaviour that apply just as much to life as they do to business.

Have a listen and tell me: what’s the smallest gesture someone’s made for you that had a surprisingly big impact?

Go……

Mine, PE teacher Miss Kinsella - we used to recreate the Victoria Wood show, the one that stays with me most was

“Have you seen it ? Is it on the trolley ? Can you point at it?”

Just typing this fills me with happy memories

What about - who was your best teacher and why 👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼

Oh and this has come from several conversations I’m having with teachers on a 2027 leadership development programme ♥️🎤 by @vicofarrell

Do what makes YOU happy.

“Wow, you owned that staged” 👈🏼 when someone says this to me, I know I am in the right lane, doing what makes me happy.

PLUS the people that come up@to me after, shake my hand and say “i’m going to make a change with XYZ in my life” also tells me the message is right, the message landed and in this current world, this message is much needed.

Got a conference coming up and want something powerful, delivered with impact - drop me a message.

Your life, your lane, live it well

Guesting on @thewineoclockwoman aka Rebecca Thomson ’s Podcast “The Wine O’Clock Woman”

I wanted to reset my relationship with Alcohol - I used it to celebrate a great day and commiserate a pants day.

To be fair since Covid, I had got into a 5 o’clock Boris announcement “Gin o’clock” habit.

I have business coaches, a mastermind, accountability in business but not personally.

I’ve not had a drink since 23rd March. This isn’t a post on “wow look at me” it’s a post to talk more about the power of accountability.

Do you have an accountability partner ?

Who holds space for you ?

Do you hold space for others ?

The power of space - the power of a PAUSE

Selfish.

Not exactly a word we tend to associate with great leadership, is it?

But my guest this week, Gary Parsons, thinks we need to completely rethink it.

Because being selfish doesn’t have to mean putting yourself first at the expense of everyone else. It can mean protecting your energy, setting boundaries, saying no and making sure you’re actually in a position to show up properly for the people around you.

Gary also shares his incredibly personal experience of developing Bell’s palsy at 18, living with a visible facial difference and why, for 20 years, he made the conscious decision to stop smiling.

We talk leadership, boundaries, self-esteem, communication, presenteeism and why sometimes the most selfish thing you can do might actually be the best thing for everyone.

So, what do you think?

Can being selfish make you a better leader?
