Japan, May 2026. What an epic trip! And what an epic smile 😍
I felt a bit more tentative photographing strangers in Japan than in other places. This was one of the first images I captured when we arrived. It was so nice to get such a lovely sunny response when I popped my head through the door 🤩

Of all the experiences of eye contact with strangers, this was the most magical. The doors sprung open as I was photographing them, and there appeared this lovely lady. With a warm smile and namaste 🙏🏻🙌🏻

Going through my images from India I noticed a theme - lots of piccies of eye contact with strangers. Not posed and intentional, but fleeting; as we passed on the street, or I spotted them through the window of our bus.
I remember the friendly energy of each of these fleeting connections. It’s one reason of many to keep going back to India - though for me all reasons relate to the people (okay, I admit, also the food! 😋😄)

“Hold still sir” part 2

Had some fun hanging around the barber shops in India. The clients in particular appear to relish an opportunity to hold still for the camera - or maybe it’s the razor! 😆 Man wielding razor perhaps a little accident prone, judging by pics 1 and 3 🪒🩹😆

Keeping an eye on granny… and me! 👀

Came across the two little chaps on a wander through the back streets of Karauli. They were cute and cheeky and curious. As I wandered back I stopped to say hello to this lovely lady. And there, right behind her, were her two cheeky little grandkids again. Their little faces in each pic make me smile so much 😍

‘Tommy’ sprinkling sawdust onto fabric to dry the mud following the dabu printing process (see previous post).

Dabu printing is an ancient mud-resist block printing technique. The clay based paste is stamped onto fabric to prevent dye being absorbed in those areas. Sawdust is sprinkled onto the wet mud to help with drying, before being laid out in the sunshine to dry completely. The fabric is then submerged into the dye, and later washed to remove the mud, revealing the pattern.

The precision of the block printing is something else! This chap is a master of his art. After applying the base print - geometric black pattern - he is now applying a layer of yellow dye to fill in the blank squares. It’s flipping hard. I tried it! On my own piece, not his!

Block carving in Bagru is done by hand. Various tools are used depending on the pattern. For precise miniature holes a hand operated pin drill is used (pic 1). The pin drill is also often used to create tiny holes to allow the wood to breathe.

Other tools for carving patterns include chisels and small hammers. For intricate patterns the hammer is often replaced by a piece of wood for lighter tapping,
as shown in pic 2. Pics 3 and 4 are blocks created by these two carvers

Had the absolute joy of meeting several people involved in the block printing industry in the small village of Bagru, Jaipur. The visit was arranged by Rajshree of @qala_creatives. Rajshree took me to see the different stages of the process, from block carving, to fabric prep, block printing, dye fixing, etc. I then had the opportunity to create my own block printed fabric to take home. Such a fantastic day!
