Raising Accountable Boys #8

Before your son gets into middle school, high school or starts dating, teach him what he might otherwise mistake for interest, permission, or agreement.

These are experiences many girls and women go through. Help him understand them early.

1. How women hold emotions.
She may swallow her anger because she doesn’t want to be called dramatic or difficult. Her silence doesn’t mean everything is okay.

2. How we show kindness.
She can smile, compliment him, and enjoy his company without wanting to date him. Kindness is not a romantic promise.

3. How we say no.
She may soften her rejection to avoid an argument or embarrassing him. “No, thank you” is just as final as “NO.”

4. How we move through social situations.
She may be thinking about who will walk her home, how she’ll leave, or how he’ll react if she refuses. Teach him to respect her choices without demanding an explanation.

5. How we respond to public humiliation.
She may laugh when someone jokes about her body or shares something private. Sometimes laughing is how she gets through the moment. It doesn’t make the joke okay.

Your son needs to hear this from you, and practice it at home.

When someone says stop, he stops.
When he hears no, he respects it.
When he causes harm, he takes responsibility and repairs it.

Use Strong Back, Soft Front Parenting™: regulate your breath, keep your tone calm and firm, and remember his brain is still developing. He needs repeated teaching and clear expectations.

Put those expectations into The Family Agreement System™. Let him help define respect, boundaries, and repair, and hold every family member to them.

Raise a young man who takes women words seriously, even when his friends don’t.

Families need systems. 🤎

Which of these will you talk about with your son first?

She disagreed with you.
Now you’re barely speaking to her.

Ask yourself: am I taking a moment to calm down, or am I waiting for her to agree before I’m warm with her again?

There’s a difference.

“I need a few minutes. We’ll talk after dinner” gives you room to breathe and tells her you’re coming back.

Silence that leaves her guessing can teach her to hide her opinions to keep your affection.

You want a daughter who can think for herself and still enjoy being close to you. That begins with how you handle disagreement at home.

This is Strong Back, Soft Front Parenting™:

🤎 Strong Back = Breath. Breathe before and during the conversation so you can lead without escalating.

🤎 Soft Front = Tone. Speak calmly, respectfully, and firmly. You can hold the boundary without withdrawing your warmth.

🤎 Awareness = Development. Her brain is still developing. She needs practice expressing disagreement respectfully—and your guidance when she gets it wrong.

In The Family Agreement System™, you agree together on how disagreements are handled: how to ask for a pause, when to return, and how to repair hurtful words. She gets a voice. You still lead.

This week, let her experience this:
“We disagree. The boundary stands. And I still love being your mom.”

Families need systems. 🤎

Raising Confident girls #8

If you want your 16-year-old to understand that everyone contributes, begin teaching that while she’s young.

Let her learn with a few dishes. Work beside her. Show her what finished looks like. Give her time to become capable.

Her contribution shouldn’t depend on how exhausted you look or how frustrated you sound.

Through The Family Agreement System™, we agree together on responsibilities, when they’re done, and what happens when someone doesn’t follow through. Our children have a voice in creating the expectations, consequences, and how we repair.

Repeated practice helps a task become familiar. Having a say gives children a chance to take ownership.

And we have work to practice, too:

🤎 Strong Back = Breath. Breathe before and during the interaction so you’re regulated enough to hold the expectation.

🤎 Soft Front = Tone. Speak calmly, respectfully, and firmly. You can expect contribution without sarcasm or shame.

🤎 Awareness = Development. Remember her brain is still developing. Teach for her age, allow mistakes, and help her practice again.

Starting at 8 doesn’t promise you’ll never have pushback at 16. It means you’ve spent those years teaching her that home contribution is everyone’s work.

So you can finish dinner, share the cleanup, and still enjoy being together.

Teach your son that a woman’s body belongs to her! And NOT FOR HIS PLEASURE!

What she wears. How she dances. Who she flirts with. Where she goes. None of it gives him permission to touch her!

Teach Your Son
Being in his room is not consent. Neither is having said yes before.

Teach Your Son
A woman is a person with the right to decide, not someone who exists for his sexual use. He is never owed access to her body.

Teach Your Son
To ask, respect her answer, and stop immediately if she changes her mind. Silence is not permission. Pressure is not consent.

Have this conversation with Your son constantly
Return to it. Hold him accountable for how he treats girls now.

Use Strong Back, Soft Front Parenting™: regulate your breath, speak calmly and firmly, and remember his developing brain needs clear, repeated guidance.

Make respect for bodies and boundaries explicit in The Family Agreement System™.

Your love for your son must include teaching him to respect someone else’s “body”

I agree with this dad on one thing:

Your teenager having a phone does not mean they get unlimited privacy, unlimited access, or unlimited control over it.

But I would handle it differently.

I wouldn’t wait until there’s a problem with the phone to suddenly announce the rules.

I would have the agreement before the phone ever becomes a fight.

Parents, electronics should be a part of your Family Agreement System.

Make sure all these things and talked about and included:

When the phone can be used.
Where it can be used.
What happens at bedtime.
What apps require permission.
Whether parents have the password.
What happens if the agreement is broken.

Because when expectations are only introduced during conflict, your teenager thinks:

“Mom is taking control of me.”
“Dad is “doing too much” and it’s not fair”

When expectations were agreed upon ahead of time, the conversation becomes:

“This is what our family already agreed to.”
“This is what you already agreed to”

That difference is powerful.

And this is where Strong Back, Soft Front Parenting™ comes in.

Strong Back = Breath.
Regulate yourself before you address what you found or what went wrong. You hold the line without letting fear run the conversation.

Soft Front = Tone.
Calm. Respectful. Firm. You can protect your child without humiliating them, threatening them, or turning the phone into a power struggle.

Awareness = Development.
Remember: the teenage brain is still developing. Access to the entire internet requires more guidance than their growing brain may believe it needs.

Your teenager may carry the phone.

But you are still the parent responsible for helping them learn how to use it.

💡Don’t build the rules in the middle of the emergency.

Build the agreement before you need it.

That is what family systems do.

The Family Agreement System™ gives families a way to decide these things before everyone is angry, scared or reacting.

Raising confident girls #7

You want your daughter to enjoy her first crush without feeling she has to earn affection by ignoring her own discomfort.

Start these conversations at 10. Then keep having them as she grows.

Teach these through ordinary moments: respect her refusal of a hug, practice a clear “no,” and listen when she tells you something uncomfortable.

Children learn boundaries through what we repeatedly practice and respect at home.

In The Family Agreement System™, make the safety plan clear: a code word, a pickup plan, and trusted adults she can contact.

Then practice Strong Back, Soft Front Parenting™ when she comes to you:

🤎Strong Back = Breath. Regulate yourself so you can help.

🤎Soft Front = Tone. Speak calmly, respectfully, and firmly.

🤎Awareness = Development. Remember her brain is still developing. Guide her through the decision.

These lessons support her safety. They never make her responsible for someone else’s harm. Freezing, staying quiet, or being unable to leave is not consent.

🙌🏾Save this for a conversation with your daughter.

Raising Accountable Boys #8

Teach him at 10, so by 18 respecting women is already part of who he is.

Because respect for women should be practiced way before romance enters the picture.

1. Teach him that “no” ends the conversation.
She doesn’t want a hug.
She says stop.
She doesn’t want to play.

He does not argue, pressure, tease or punish her for it.
Respect begins with accepting a boundary he doesn’t like.

2. Teach him that kindness does not earn access.

He helped her. Bought her something. Complimented her. Was a good friend.

She still does not owe him attention, affection or a relationship.

A woman is not a reward for good behavior.

3. Teach him that rejection does not give him permission to become cruel.

She doesn’t like him back. She chooses someone else. She changes her mind.

He can be disappointed.

He cannot humiliate her, call her names or punish her for her choice.

This is why The Family Agreement System™ is important..

We don’t wait until our children are older to suddenly teach respect, boundaries and how to handle disappointment.

We agree on those values early, then practice them in ordinary moments at home.

And we teach through Strong Back, Soft Front Parenting™.

Strong Back = Breath.
Regulate yourself first. Then hold the line:
“You can be disappointed. You cannot disrespect her.”

Soft Front = Tone.
Correct him calmly, respectfully and firmly without shaming him.

Awareness = Developing Brain.
At 10, he is still learning how to handle rejection, frustration and big emotions.
That doesn’t excuse disrespect. It tells us why we need to teach it now.
Because one day your 10-year-old will be an 18-year-old man interacting with women without you standing beside him.
By then, you don’t want respect to be a lesson he is just learning.
You want it built into who he is.

Teach the boy now, so the man already knows how to respect her later.

We were sitting down to dinner when my son left his phone on the table.
Our Family Agreement says no phones at the table. I noticed it, but I gave him a moment. He noticed it too and moved the phone himself.
No reminder.
No irritated tone.
We kept eating and enjoying each other.

There was a time when that small moment could have changed the whole dinner. I would have felt frustrated, he might have reacted to my tone, and everyone at the table would have felt it.

The agreement gave us a shared expectation before the moment happened. He knew what to do, and I could give him room to do it.

That’s what I want for your family, too: a table where a mistake can be corrected and everyone can keep enjoying the meal. 🤎

One day you will want your grown child to call you after a mistake, and not hide from you because they are ashamed.

That relationship is being built now, in the ugh, the poor choices, the frustrating conversations, and the moments when your teenager does the exact thing you warned them not to do.

Their brain is still developing the judgment, emotional control, and ability to think ahead that adulthood requires. They need guidance, but they also need room to practice becoming who they want to be.

So breathe, parents.

You do not have to prevent every mistake to be a good parent.

Hold the boundary. Watch your tone. Let the lesson belong to them. Stay close enough to guide them without taking over their life.

That is Strong Back, Soft Front Parenting™:

Strong enough to lead them.
Soft enough to remain a place they can return to.

You are not raising a perfect teenager. You are raising a future adult who knows how to make a mistake, take responsibility, and find their way forward.

Families need systems. 🤎

Imagine getting through the morning without carrying the argument into the rest of your day.

Your teen may still push back. Take a breath before you answer. You can speak softly and hold the boundary.

Teens are still developing the ability to manage strong emotions. Your steady response gives them a chance to practice it with you.

Strong back. Soft front. Then get on with your morning. 🤎

Imagine your daughter at 25, sitting across from someone she loves, hearing an answer she doesn’t like. You want her to know how to be in control of herself, how to stay in the conversation and how to respectfully respond and hold her boundaries.

She learns that in these little moments at home. Children practice what they see us do when emotions run high.

Hold your boundary. Keep your warmth. Let her grow into a woman who can do both. 🤎
