“I received your letter but it doesn’t matter, since I don’t like anything in it” is the first line of a letter a Croatian mother was writing to her son in Minnesota around 1920. It is a particularly heart-wrenching letter; I was able to read the original.

The letter’s first line was so stark, and full of dark humor.

Like many immigrants, I have held on to letters written by family members. I recently came across a box of letters while moving my art studio and was taken aback by their visual beauty and the strength of their language.

Finding my letters motivated me to look for historical examples of correspondence between immigrants and the families they left behind.
I was taken aback by how relevant some of the topics discussed in historical letters still are today.

I selected and printed phrases from archives that I found particularly affecting. This is one of the first prints in this body of work, produced during my residency at @riversideartscenter

My summer in Croatia wrapped up beautifully with an interview with @lea.bilicic for @vizkultura — the leading art and culture portal in Croatia. We talked about my recent exhibitions in Zagreb and Dubrovnik, the relationship between language and print, immigrant memory, and why I work with letterpress as both process and metaphor.

These are a few moments from the wonderful opening of "Soft Archives" at Karas Art Hub in Zagreb.

Thank you to everyone who came to spend the evening with us. I'm especially grateful to curator Mihaela Zajec for her thoughtful collaboration, and to all of my old friends, new friends, colleagues, and fellow artists who made the opening such a great experience. ❤️

We had a wonderful opening at @zlati_ajngel on Friday. I’m so grateful to all of my family, friends, and very special surprise guests who came to be with us.

Having the opportunity to share an exhibition with the people I grew up with and those closest to me in Croatia is incredibly meaningful.

“Home in Motion: Modular Poetics and Belonging” opens at Galerija Zlati Ajngel in Varaždin tomorrow

This exhibition feels especially meaningful because it is my first solo show in my hometown, in the family gallery, with work that has been shaped by years of moving between Croatia and the United States.

As Ivan Bujan writes in the exhibition catalog, home is not a fixed place or inherited certainty, but something continually assembled through acts of translation, memory, movement, and return. Rather than offering fixed meanings, these works invite viewers to rearrange words, ideas, and associations, creating new readings and new possibilities for belonging.

I’m deeply grateful to everyone who helped bring this exhibition to life, and especially proud to share it in Varaždin.

Pozivamo vas na otvorenje samostalne izložbe “𝗦𝗢𝗙𝗧 𝗔𝗥𝗖𝗛𝗜𝗩𝗘𝗦” umjetnice 𝗩𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗦𝗮𝗰̌𝗶𝗰́. Otvorenje će se održati u 𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗸, 𝟳. 𝘀𝗿𝗽𝗻𝗷𝗮 [𝟭𝟵 𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶] u 𝗚𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗷𝗶 𝗞𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘀.

Izložba istražuje teme doma, pripadnosti i interkulturalnih razmjena kroz medij tiska, polazeći od pojma arhiva kao prostora sjećanja, identiteta i prijenosa iskustava. Propitujući što čini “meki arhiv”, radovi otvaraju pitanja osobne i kolektivne memorije te načina na koji tragovi života, migracije i kulturnih susreta ostaju pohranjeni izvan službenih povijesti.

Koristeći tipografske reljefne tehnike, od tiskarskih ploča i drvenih matrica do metalnog sloga, Vida Sačić razvija umjetničku praksu u kojoj se tiskana riječ susreće s temama podrijetla, rada i pripadnosti. Izložba povezuje iskustvo života između Hrvatske i Sjedinjenih Američkih Država, stvarajući prostor za dijalog između dviju kulturnih tradicija kroz materijalnost otiska i arhivsku logiku.

Soft Archives predstavlja novi ciklus radova u kojem arhiv nije zamišljen kao statična zbirka dokumenata, već kao živa struktura sastavljena od sjećanja, jezika, predmeta i osobnih iskustava. Izložba poziva posjetitelje na promišljanje načina na koji oblikujemo vlastite arhive te kako oni sudjeluju u izgradnji identiteta i osjećaja pripadnosti.

Izložba ostaje otvorena do 𝟮𝟰.𝟳.𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲.

The last days of the installation - and I wanted to make sure to get a photo in front of the work! This has been such a logistical undertaking for me and I felt like this was my graduation photo 😊
