I called him my bestie in my book, Happy 83 Big B My Bestie, . Excerpt from my book The Mirrors on The Tides... The year was 1982 and I had just returned to my boarding school after a summer vacation with my cousins in Kalahandi, Orissa. My mother had been unable to visit me as she was on a national duty of a grave kind at an extremely disturbed part of India. I had disco danced my vacations with the likes of Funky Town that I heard in School. The School Captain had emerged out of a phone booth that was lowered on stage, commendable even by today's standards and he had popped out in a shirt that had a 100 bulbs that changed colour. We had been introduced to the dazzle of Disco. However, things had drastically changed after the vacation. Two of my dormitory mates had come with a new drill, two steps forward and a kick and they would repeat the act in four directions. These two Sikh boys from the Steel City of Bhilai were beginning to express far more with an audacity steely and were even imitating a deep baritone. Within the realm of my 8 year old curiosity, I happened to quiz them about the adoption of this very distinct avatar. And that's when they gave me that perplexed look as if I were some alien who had just arrived with no bearings of fellow sapiens. ”You haven't seen the movie "Yaraana?” I answered in the negative. “This is Amitabh Bachchan’s signature step!” That's my earliest recollection of the name but I had been introduced to his ilk of Vijay through my growing years. My Silsila (Relationship) with my Naseeb (my fortune) continued as I Kabhie Kabhie (Sometimes) even got my Math wrong with Do aur Do Paanch (2 and 2 made 5).One could list his entire filmography as every movie was possibly designed to fall in love with the biggest billboard of our subconscious bylanes, the brilliant baritone from Bombay. The Big Bachchan we later called Big B had made a beeline to live within. Much before we boys in India had even heard or seen Tom Hanks become Big in a flash in his sleep in a movie, we were enamoured, infatuated, riveted with the thought of becoming men in our boyish Bata PT shoes.....)..rest in the book #amitabhbachchan #actorlife #mybestie by @vikramdevmohapatra

1994... Age 20... I look at this young man... and smile. His aspirations weren't very different from mine today... dreams, some rather outrageous ones... a belief in possibilities, in love, in people and a world without boundaries. And then life happened... took me places I hadn't imagined, introduced me to people I hadn't expected... moments of extraordinary joy, painful lessons, heartbreaks and countless stories. I wandered... changed directions... began things, abandoned some and discovered others. Did I become everything I imagined I would? No... But did I experience more than that young man could possibly have imagined? Oh yes... And somewhere along those journeys, something was quietly being added to Vikram... in ways I cannot quite explain, let alone measure. Perhaps I haven't travelled the straightest road or reached the destinations others expected of me... but I wouldn't trade the journey for a more impressive résumé. I still have dreams... desires... and the same curiosity about what tomorrow might bring. Only now, I don't want to miss today while trying to get there. As Osho said... “Be... don't become.” And here I am... #life #humanbeing #reflection by @vikramdevmohapatra
AM I LISTENING?... 31st March 2009... Sometimes the mind travels to places we never intended to visit. I had lost my mother in September 2007... and was discovering the joys and responsibilities of being a father myself. Somewhere between memories of her, watching my little boy grow, and the everyday noise of life... I found myself writing a few lines. "But I can't hear, The whisper in my ear, The voice within, Am I listening?" I still ask myself that question... Perhaps we spend so much time listening to the world around us that we forget to listen to the one within. This is one of the many reflections that eventually found its way into my book... The Mirrors on the Tides – Reflections Across Shores. A document of my wandering mind... and where it took me. Are you listening... within and around? Some sounds belong to the moment... others stay with us for a lifetime. :) by @vikramdevmohapatra
Who is Vikram... the actor? On his own... not much really. Just a face... a voice... a body... and a mind with a few stories of its own. :) Then comes a writer who imagines a life for him... a director who gives that life purpose... a cinematographer who finds his light... a makeup artist who gives him another face... a costume designer who gives him a world to belong to... and an editor who decides how much of him you eventually get to see. And somewhere in all this... the actor must be ready. His voice... his body... his mind... his imagination. These are his instruments. To observe... to listen... to surrender... and for a little while, believe that he is somebody else. Not to pretend... but to become. These two images made me think about that. One is a photograph... the other an interpretation by AI. Same face... another expression of it. Much like cinema, where so many imaginations come together to create someone who never really existed... yet might feel more real than the people we know. Perhaps that's the beautiful contradiction of acting... to become real on reel. And then... when someone says CUT... to find your way back to yourself. :) #TheActorsLife #Acting #IndianCinema #TheArtOfStorytelling by @vikramdevmohapatra
Every Dussehra we gather to watch Ravana burn... and every year I wonder how many of his heads we have actually managed to get rid of. :) Look around us... wars, hatred, greed, intolerance, the extraordinary ease with which we judge one another... and the frightening comfort with which we sometimes look away. We have conquered distances, built extraordinary machines, connected billions of people... yet somehow struggle with the simple business of being human. And then there are my own Ravanas... the anger I haven't always controlled, the people I may have judged too quickly, the fears that have held me back, the ego that occasionally mistakes itself for self-respect... and the times I could have been kinder. I have spent a fair part of my life discovering that defeating someone else is considerably easier than defeating something within yourself. Perhaps the real celebration isn't watching ten heads go up in flames... but quietly recognising one of our own and deciding to let it go. Here's wishing all of us a little more courage to look within... a little more compassion to look around... and a world where goodness doesn't need an occasion to triumph. Happy Dussehra... 🔥🙏 by @vikramdevmohapatra

An inked finger... a little faith in democracy... and the belief that every institution entrusted with our votes must remain open to questions and accountability. Protests, questions and dissent are part of a living democracy... So is the responsibility to listen. We the People... always. 🇮🇳 by @vikramdevmohapatra
