🌮🥂Pairing wine with enchiladas? Pour Chardonnay (and thank me later😉)

I made these veggie enchiladas the other day - loaded with bold, spicy flavours, avocado, and plenty of savoury goodness. And I’m happy to report that The Practice Chardonnay from South Australia was an unexpected, yet perfect match✨

The wine’s bright acidity🍋 helped cut through the richness, while its ripe fruit🍐 and subtle creaminess had enough weight to stand up to all those layers of flavour🌮

This was a reminder for me that sometimes the best pairings are the ones that don’t follow the usual rules 🌿✨ so I’m passing that reminder onto you!

❓What’s the last unexpected yet delicious pairing you had?

If you’re looking for wines that overdeliver for the price, put South Africa on your radar🇿🇦🍷

I recently had the opportunity to attend a meal with Boschendal’s Cellar Master & Winemaker, Jacques Viljoen, and taste through a selection of wines from this historic estate, founded in 1685 in the Cape Winelands.

From the 🥂Cap Classique Brut NV to the 🥂1685 Chenin Blanc and 🥂Chardonnay, and then the 🍷1685 Pinotage and 🍷Heritage Collection Black Angus, the wines were a great showcase of the quality and diversity coming out of South Africa 📢And my PSA here is to remind you all- don’t sleep on Pinotage!

Aside from not sleeping on Pinotage, my biggest takeaway? ✨The value✨

These wines offer the kind of balance🤸🏻‍♀️, character😇 and polish😎 that can be surprisingly hard to find at their respective price points. They’re also a great reminder that drinking well doesn’t always mean spending more, and that South Africa continues to be one of the wine world’s best-kept secrets for quality and value💫

Paired with a delicious meal and plenty of wine conversation, it was a pretty perfect experience🍷✨

Thank you to @superwinegirl and the Boschendal team for having me!

🔥😇 hot take incoming… “Bordeaux Blanc doesn’t get the attention it deserves”

While Bordeaux gets all the attention for its reds, the region quietly produces some of the most vibrant, food-friendly white wines out there✨ Crisp citrus🍋, stone fruit🍑, fresh herbs🌿, and that signature mineral edge… all often at a fraction of the price of other famous white wine regions🧡

🍇Usually a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon, Bordeaux Blanc delivers both freshness and complexity. And this one from the Graves appellation - Graves J. Lebègue 2024 - is no exception.

Available for $17ish bucks at the LCBO, it’s a total steal.

💌 save this post for your next trip to Florence!

✨The city of history, culture and of course, incredible food and wine❣️

🍷Procacci 1885, Via de’ Tornabuoni
➡️ came here for apéro and it was so lovely! Lush vibes, cozy interior and a beautiful patio.

🍷🍴La Boite, Piazza di S Paolino
➡️ a cute little wine bar in a quieter piazza (but still mere minutes walking from the busier part of old town). They serve snacks and sandwiches too - low key and delicious!

🍷La Petite, Via Pellicceria
➡️ this is a vibey lounge/patio in a busy neighbourhood, perfect for an alfresco beverage!

🍴Osteria del Cinghiale Bianco, Borgo san Iacopo
➡️ this restaurant was recommended to me by a colleague and it delivered! Absolutely delicious and the place is a lot larger than it appears, so even if there’s a bit of a wait, it’s worth it!

🍴Ristorante Bottega di Fattoria, Piazza dell’Olio
➡️ a quaint, homey restaurant wish delicious, authentic Florentine dishes.

🍷Enoteca Bellini, Via della Spada
➡️ this is another super cute wine bar. Such a fab selection of wines. We got glasses and drank on the sidewalk in front of the shop because it was such a happening spot - adored the vibe!

🍴Trattoria La Casalinga, Via dei Michelozzo
➡️ stumbled upon this place for lunch and I was so impressed. Classic Florentine dishes and superb service!

🍷Wine Windows, various locations throughout old town
➡️ do I need to even convince you here?! It’s an iconic Florentine experience, so it just a matter of how many you stop at now 😂

❓which one of these spots is calling your name?

💌✨save this post for the next time you’re in Rome!

Just a few of my favorite spots for apéro plus a special honorable mention of a casual pasta joint that checked all the boxes for me✨

📍 Il Goccetto, Via dei Banchi Vecchi
➡️ excellent BTG selection and walls of wine to choose from if you’re doing a bottle!

📍 Bartaruga, Via dei Funari
➡️ cozy, colorful, great cocktails and if you’re lucky, you can catch some live music!

📍Jerry Thomas Bar Room, Via del Moro
➡️ not to be confused with the original location, this one is in a converted train car and easy to walk by as a speak easy

📍Collegio Bistrot, Piazza Capranica
➡️ in a touristy neighbourhood, but wine selection was top notch!

📍Grano Trattoria, Via Celsa
➡️ I’m still thinking about this trattoria - it feels like it’s where to locals go with a no-fuss menu and incredibly flavourful dishes

❓Which place would you go to first?

Long before “Super Tuscans” became legendary, Tenuta San Guido changed the course of Italian wine history with the creation of Sassicaia✨ In the 1940s, inspired by the great wines of Bordeaux, Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta planted Cabernet Sauvignon in Bolgheri’s gravelly coastal soils. And (𝘭𝘶𝘤𝘬𝘺 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘶𝘴😉), what began as a private family experiment evolved into one of the world’s most iconic wines, and the estate that put Bolgheri on the global wine map🍷🗺️

So last week, when I had the opportunity to hear from granddaughter of the estate, Priscilla Incisa della Rocchetta, it was a bit of a pinch-me moment✨

We tasted through the newest vintages (𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘣𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘺𝘦𝘢𝘳) of:
🍷Le Difese
🍷Guidalberto
🍷Sassicaia

I think we can all agree that Tenuta San Guido is a true benchmark of elegance, vision, and Italian winemaking heritage🇮🇹 And while the estate is famous for the iconic Sassicaia wine, I was also a big fan of Le Difese which is at a much more accessible price point😉

🍴And these wines were ever-so-thoughtfully paired with some beautiful dishes at the University Club of Toronto.

It’s definitely a meal and experience I’ll remember for a long time✨

✨Happy Monday, wine friends! I’m still sorting through all my vacation photos, but in the meantime (𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘪𝘯 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦😉), I wanted to share this rosé I enjoyed over the weekend.

LYV Rosé 🌸🥂

🇫🇷This rosé comes from Languedoc (𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘤𝘩 𝘪𝘴 𝘢 𝘳𝘦𝘨𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘐 𝘩𝘢𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘭𝘦𝘨𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘷𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘵 𝘴𝘶𝘮𝘮𝘦𝘳 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢 𝘳𝘦𝘨𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘐 𝘢𝘥𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘴𝘰 𝘮𝘶𝘤𝘩). It’s a dry wine but the juicy red fruit notes leave a naturally sweet finish that makes it so enjoyable on its own or with practically any bite🙌🏽

I sipped this alongside some Thai takeout🥡 (𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘧𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘗𝘢𝘥 𝘒𝘦𝘦 𝘔𝘢𝘰) on Friday evening. And then on Saturday, I enjoyed it as an aperitif🌞 alongside some fennel flavoured taralli and right into dinner with a creamy cherry tomato-feta pasta🍝 Not many wines can span that many flavour profiles successfully, but this rosé certainly did❣️

📢Lucky for my Ontario friends, it’s currently $2 off at the LCBO (𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘭 𝘔𝘢𝘺 𝟸𝟺), coming in under $18 - so it’s a great one to stock up for the upcoming long weekend👀

🌙🍇 I’ll leave you with a fun fact about this wine: did you know the grapes are actually harvested at night in order to preserve the freshness of the fruit?
