Featured in Elle Decor India - “For the love of clay.”

Ceramic artist Vinod Daroz’s Vadodara studio, designed in collaboration with Studio Yamini, was built to be three things at once: a working laboratory, an archive of his 30-year practice, and a space quiet enough to disappear into the work.

It was never about designing a beautiful studio. It was about designing one that gets out of the way — so the only thing that matters is the clay.

Thank you to @mrudul.pathak and the team at Elle Decor for featuring this space.

Some design solutions come from a drawing board. This one came from a conversation.

Every gallery needs a way to divide space without closing it off. A partition that separates zones without cutting them apart allowing light to pass through, maintaining visual continuity, and keeping the energy of the space alive on both sides. A wall would have been the obvious answer. But a wall would have been wrong.

The solution came from the artist himself.

Vinod had acquired hundreds of discarded ceramic bottles accumulated over time, sitting unused, waiting for a purpose. When Studio Yamini saw them, the question became not what to do with the gallery partition, but what to do with the bottles. And the answer to both questions turned out to be the same.

An MS rod frame structure was designed a precise grid of mild steel rods into which each ceramic bottle could be slotted individually. The technical design of the frame was Studio Yamini’s engineered to hold the bottles securely while maintaining the lightness and transparency the gallery needed. The bottles were then taken by Vinod and glazed by his own hand each one fired in specific colours, each one a small individual work of art in its own right.

The result is a partition unlike anything else. It divides without blocking. It filters light. It moves slightly, almost imperceptibly, when the air shifts. And it is made entirely from material that was once considered waste transformed by the artist’s craft and the architect’s structure into the defining moment of the entire project.

This is what happens when architect and artist sit together long enough to find the answer that neither could have arrived at alone.

The ground floor is where the work is made. The first floor is where it finds its audience.

Every decision on the gallery floor of Vinod’s studio was made with one person in mind the visitor. The buyer. The collector. The fellow artist who climbs the staircase and enters a space that is entirely different in character from the working floor below.

The shift is immediate and deliberate. Where the ground floor is raw, functional, and process-driven, the first floor is calm, considered, and curated. Kota stone flooring replaces the IPS below reflective, clean, and gallery-grade. The two floors are materially differentiated because they serve two entirely different purposes.

One is a place of making. The other is a place of experiencing.

The lighting was designed to gallery standard track lighting positioned to direct focused light onto each individual work displayed on the white walls. In a space where potential buyers come to see, appreciate, and purchase ceramic work, the quality of light is everything. Every piece gets its own moment. Nothing is lost in shadow.

And because a gallery experience should never feel rushed, a small sitting nook was created within the space a corner where a visitor can settle in, have a cup of coffee, and absorb the work around them at their own pace. Without having to descend back to the working floor. Without interrupting the artist at work below.

This is a gallery that understands what a gallery is actually for not just displaying work, but creating the conditions in which it can truly be seen.

Some spaces are designed to be seen. This one was designed to work.

The kiln zone at Vinod’s studio is the most technically demanding space in the entire project and the one that required the deepest understanding of the ceramic process before a single design decision could be made.

Two kilns, with provision for a third. Firing cycles that run continuously for over 24 hours without interruption. A cooling period after firing where the kiln cannot be opened until the temperature drops to a safe level. Raw materials imported porcelain and clay stored in bulk, worth lakhs, requiring careful organisation and absolute protection from moisture. This was the reality that the architecture had to respond to.

The placement of the kilns was decided first. Around them, custom storage racks were designed in a systematic manner to house the imported raw materials organised, accessible, and completely protected. Because in a space where the materials are as valuable as the finished work, storage is never just storage. It is part of the design.

The most critical challenge was ventilation. Kilns generate extreme heat fans and forced ventilation are impossible in their proximity.

Every window in this zone was intentionally positioned for passive heat dissipation. A skylight was introduced to bring natural light into what is essentially a deep functional working zone doing two things simultaneously, as every good architectural decision should.

And above it all, the temporary roof structure over this zone required meticulous waterproofing. One drop of water on raw clay or imported porcelain and everything is lost.

In a space with no room for decoration, you find the one element that can carry everything.

Designing a working studio is an exercise in restraint. No wall panelling. No decorative surfaces. No cosmetic finishes. Every material had to be rugged, maintenance free, and built for the daily demands of ceramic production. The floor had to withstand heavy use. The walls had to serve as working and display surfaces. There was simply no space for architectural expression.

Except one.

The staircase.

When Studio Yamini identified that the staircase was the single element in the entire ground floor that could carry an architectural statement, the decision was immediate make it count. Every other surface steps back. This one steps forward.

Built entirely in MS mild steel the staircase is painted in a bold, unapologetic red. In a space of white walls, ceramic works, and natural IPS flooring, it cuts through the room like a brushstroke. It doesn’t ask for attention. It commands it. And yet it never competes with the work displayed around it because the red grounds the space rather than overwhelming it.

Beneath the staircase, the dead space that would have otherwise gone to waste has been activated as a small discreet pantry. Self-serve, functional, completely hidden in plain sight. Because in a studio that runs on long working hours and kiln firing cycles that go through the night, a pantry isn’t a luxury. It’s a necessity.

One staircase. Two roles. The statement piece and the space saver both at once.

A working studio has no room for decoration. Every decision has to earn its place.

The ground floor of Vinod’s studio is where the work actually happens and the design responds to that completely. Potter’s wheels positioned with access to electrical points. Storage racks designed in a streamlined, organised manner so that finished and unfinished ceramic pieces can be stored properly without the space feeling chaotic.

Chattai curtains woven cane covering the loft storage instead of conventional shutters. Light, natural, and completely in keeping with the craft identity of the space.

The walls are white and largely unadorned because the ceramic works displayed on them are the only decoration this space needs or wants.

But the detail that makes this floor extraordinary is underfoot. The flooring is IPS Indian Pattern Stone a cement floor cast on site, rugged enough to handle the daily demands of a production studio. But embedded within it, while the cement was still being cast, are ceramic flower inlays. Small, precise, completely unexpected. The artist’s own craft embedded literally into the floor he works on every single day.

And above it all, industrial pendant lights hang at considered heights chosen specifically for the intensity of light required to see the minute details of clay modelling. In a space where function is everything, even the lighting is purposeful.

This is a floor that knows exactly what it is and does its job without once forgetting who it belongs to.

Before the door even opens, the studio has already told you who lives here.

At Vinod’s ceramic studio in Vadodara, the entrance was designed to do two things simultaneously protect the artist’s privacy and invite the right kind of attention. The fabricated doors combine fluted glass with selective transparent panels, a deliberate decision. The industrial road outside meant unwanted eyes the fluted glass obscures the view from outside while still allowing light to filter softly through. Just enough connection to the outside world. No more.

But the detail that stops you before you reach the door is the nameplate. Made in ceramic, fired in orange crafted by Vinod himself. In most buildings, the nameplate is an afterthought. Here, it is the first work of art you encounter. The studio announces itself in its own language, before you have even stepped inside.

And then there is the tree. A naturally existing tree outside the entrance was retained untouched, unaltered. It provides passive shade to the facade, softens the industrial character of the surroundings, and brings an element of nature to a space that is entirely about working with the earth.

Three decisions at the entrance. Each one deliberate. Each one telling you exactly what kind of space this is going to be.

Where architecture and craft speak the same language.

Vinod’s ceramic studio in Vadodara is unlike anything we have designed before.

A space entirely built around a process the making, firing, glazing, displaying, and selling of ceramic art. Every decision, from the passive ventilation in the kiln zone to the ceramic flower inlays in the IPS floor, was made in response to how the art is actually created.

A red MS staircase that becomes the only statement in a purely functional space. A gallery floor where Kota stone and track lighting give every ceramic work the attention it deserves.

And a partition made from hundreds of discarded ceramic bottles glazed by Vinod himself, framed by us that became the defining moment of the entire project.

This is what happens when architecture gets out of the way and lets the craft lead.

Some projects don’t follow a rulebook.

This one asked questions that standard design solutions couldn’t answer.

A typology we hadn’t designed before. A process we had to learn from scratch.

A collaboration that pushed the boundaries of what architecture can do for craft.

Three problems. Three solutions nobody saw coming.
We’re about to show you everything.
