Home developing for Super 8, Double 8, and 16mm has been stuck since the 1980s. On 31 July, Frank changes that.

Frank is a standalone film processor for motion picture film. You pour the chemistry. Frank handles the agitation, the timing, and the temperature compensation, across B&W, C-41, E-6, ECN-2, and ECP. A full process runs on one litre.

The same time-compensation engine has run in our AGO processors for two and a half years, in the hands of over 3,000 photographers. Frank is that engine, rebuilt for cine film. It automates everything except the pours.

The design is finished, a prototype is already in the hands of a 16mm shooter, and the campaign video is being filmed.

Frank goes live on Indiegogo 31 July and runs to 12 September. Retail is €1,281, all in, with DDP, VAT, and worldwide shipping included. Backers pay less, and the first 20 get Frank for under €900.

37 years expired. Super 8 film development at home;

A 50ft roll of Agfa MovieChrome exp 1989 + E6 colour positive / reversal chemicals.

My first time shooting and developing a roll like this by hand; came out pretty blue toned and scratched but I can’t wait for the scans!

Has me wondering what all this time has left as a trace upon the medium..

Photographer Adam Welch packed the REEL Paper 8 into the Nantahala National Forest to find out if it could really replace a full darkroom, and what he found is worth reading.

He shot a scene on 4x5 film, developed the negatives on the spot, then printed six sheets of 8x10 silver-gelatin fiber paper, all without hauling a single darkroom tray. Normally that kind of printing needs three to five trays and a lot of chemistry, but loading the paper into the REEL Paper 8 inside a Paterson 8-reel tank, paired with the AGO Film Processor, let him develop, stop, fix and rinse in one sealed tank, using noticeably less chemistry along the way.

I treated myself a large format camera. I had to shoot some infrared on it! Changing a little from the regular lonely tree with “wood effect” I propose a seascape with some vegetation. If you’ve ever tried developing Super 8 or 16mm at home, you know the first problem… Finding a tank. The Lomo tank went out of production years ago. So you’re stuck scouring eBay, checking forums, asking around. And even if you find one, the whole workflow is manual. Every roll is a guess and getting consistent results from one development to the next is almost non existent.

There needs to be something better.
