Walking on my way through Campania, on my way to meeting Ron Mills in Benevento. The white grape being harvested is Malvasia (Mal VAh cee ah) di Candia, one of the most popular white grapes in Italy. Also known as Malvasia Bianca di Candia, it is likely Greek in origin, as Candia is Latin for the island of Crete. It is also distinct from Malvasia di Candia Aromatica, which is, well, more aromatic… I stopped twice to talk to the people who were harvesting… The older woman harvesting is in her 80s, and did not have time to stop and chat, so she let her son talk to me (first picture). The two gentlemen asked me for a bag, and filled it with grapes, which I took, despite knowing I would have to ditch them around the corner - couldn’t really walk around with 5 kilos of grapes in a bag, especially with the trails the way they are on the Francigena Sud. #vinumdocet #winemacgyver #malvasia #campania #winesofitaly taken in Benevento, Italy by @vinumdocet

The recommendations from my hosts for both lunch and dinner were spot on, and so was the killer wine from the Caserta region of Campania, a Falanghina Roccamonfina IGT! #vinumdocet #winemacgyver #vinositalianos by @vinumdocet

In about four weeks I will start the third leg of the Italian portion of the Francigena. The Francigena is a pilgrimage that starts in Canterbury, and historically ends in Rome. I’ve decided I don’t need to walk the portion through France, and so my walking partner, @ronmillspinyas52 and I started near Geneva and walked up over the Alps to Lucca, then the section from Lucca to Rome the in 2023 and 2024, in succession. From Rome, south, called the Francigena Sud was recently officially sanctioned in 2024. It was a historical path from Rome to Jerusalem. I’ll be starting from Rome, and walking to Monte Sant’Angelo in September, with Ron joining me in Benevento. Probably in the next year willl come he path from Monte Sant’Angelo south, the fourth stage. This section will be about 338 miles, and the final section about 315 miles.

Very excited to walk and then write about wines I find along the way. I’ll write soon about the Francigena and wines on the path on my blog on substack! by @vinumdocet

Getting into the full swing of things at Soter Vineyards, and I love doing our vineyard walks throughout the summer! It’s a great way to get outside, see what is going on in the vineyard, and why Soter wines are so amazing. They say it takes great grapes to make great wines, and this when you can see many of the things are done to get them! We do them only on Sunday mornings at 10:30, and some of the vineyard excursions are already full, but spaces are left on some Sundays. So get in there and get it booked!(link is in bio) @soterwines #sotervineyards #oregonpinot #oregonpinotnoir #methodoregon #vinumdocet by @vinumdocet
