Can we get a new Wunderhorse album please? And maybe some live shows in The Netherlands as well?

19 years ago today, R.E.M. released their first official live album.

Recorded in Dublin in 2005, R.E.M. Live shows why so many of these songs worked so well on stage. The arrangements are tighter and more direct, Peter Buck’s guitar has more bite, and Michael Stipe often sounds less restrained than on the studio versions. Even some of the Around the Sun material gains energy and urgency live.

That is probably what makes this album so enjoyable: familiar songs feel slightly less polished, more physical and more alive.

The band would go on to release another live album recorded in Dublin: the far superior ‘Live at the Olympia’, which is full of what Stipe called ‘olive branches’: deeper cuts from their catalogue. It’s far more energetic and raw - but that doesn’t mean this one is dull.

I did not expect ‘Super Rare’ to grab me this quickly, but it absolutely did. Wes Parker jumps between indie rock, Americana, grunge and melodic pop with the confidence of someone who has already made a few records.

What makes it so much fun is how alive it feels. Rough around the edges, full of ideas, catchy when it wants to be and just unpredictable enough to keep pulling me back in.

Wes Parker’s debut album is actually very well done.

Instagram is still one of my main sources for discovering new music. Just two days ago I read a post by @wayneroux61 about a group called Held by Trees. I had never heard of them but I was immediately smitten with the artwork. It took me ten minutes of listening and ordered it immediately. It arrived just now.

Their debut album ‘Solace’ wears its Talk Talk influence openly, but there is a good reason for that. Held By Trees brought together several musicians who actually played on Spirit of Eden, Laughing Stock and Mark Hollis’ solo album.

The result is spacious, patient and beautifully organic instrumental music, somewhere between post-rock, jazz and ambient. It is less about songs than about texture, dynamics and the silence between the notes.

A record that rewards turning the volume up and doing absolutely nothing else.

Steve Reich
Octet • Music for a large ensemble • Violin Phase
ECM Records, 1980

Incan only listen to this in complete silence. With three children, those moments are scarce.

The …Naked version of The Long And Winding Road is worth the price for this LP alone. Don’t get me wrong - I love the original version mixed by Phil Spector, but this one just hits twice as hard.

So what do you do when the internet is down in your house because of a broken fibreglass wire? You spin the new vinyl you just bought. This is one of the three Jiro Inagaki albums I bought at @concertorecordstore last week: Head Rock. As the album title suggests, it’s very much rock-influenced jazz. I’m all for it!

‘Fukushima’ sounds like a lost spiritual jazz record from the 1970s, but it was released in 2025.

What makes it stand out is the combination of modal jazz, violin, percussion and subtle Japanese influences. It feels familiar without ever sounding derivative, with arrangements that are spacious, warm and full of movement.

It is also one of those records that makes complete sense on vinyl. Put the needle down, let the side play, and allow the atmosphere to slowly take over.

Wow. I’ve never heard Kamakiriad sound this good. Absolutely stunning. I’m a big fan of Steely Dan and Donald Fagen, and this Ultradisc One-Step by Mobile Fidelity is a masterpiece in vinyl pressing - even on my humble system.

Completely different from the now quite popular ‘Funky Stuff’, ‘Wandering Birds’ finds Jiro Inagaki exploring heavy rock, distorted guitars and vocals. It’s a lot darker and it makes for a really interesting listening experience. Very good.

One of my favourite albums of 2026 is finally out on vinyl! Wes Parker (@phat_wes) released Super Rare a couple of months ago and I’ve been listening to it all spring and summer. It’s one of those albums where every next song is even better than the previous one - it’s hard to pick a favourite.

Check out his music through your favourite streaming service and if you like what you hear be fast to order it on vinyl while stock lasts - I hear there’s only a couple hundred copies!
