Dans wordt pas écht leuk als verrassing onderdeel van de choreo is. Altijd leuk om met iemand te dansen die totaal geen idee heeft wat er komt. Niet alleen worden mijn leaderskills daar elke keer beter van, het is ook zó leuk om die verrassing te zien wanneer iets lukt wat ze nog nooit hebben gedaan. In mijn lessen hou ik ervan om tussendoor iets toe te voegen dat ze op dat moment nog niet eerder hebben gehad … juist dát houdt de flow levend en het leren verrassend. Dat is voor mij de echte lol van dans: samen uitvinden hoe het werkt, elkaar aanvoelen, leren aanpassen. Want geen enkele dans is ooit hetzelfde. “WOW… wat ben ik blij dat ik dit tóch heb gedaan!” Dat zei één van mijn studenten afgelopen week tijdens mijn NY Style Salsa ON2 / Mambo les. Ze had namelijk lang getwijfeld. “Ik dacht dat de overstap van L.A. style ON1 naar ON2 héél moeilijk zou zijn.” Totdat ze ontdekte: WAIT A MINUTE… I CAN DO THIS. 😳😂 Want als je al ON1 danst, beginnen we niet ineens vanaf Mars. 🚀 Ik geef je juist TOOLS om de muziek te leren begrijpen, zodat je niet alleen maar probeert een telling te onthouden. 🎶 Hoe herken je de 1 in de muziek? 🎶 En hoe vertrek je van daaruit naar de 2? 🎶 Wat is Mambo eigenlijk en waar komt het vandaan? 🎶 Naar welk instrument luister JIJ om je timing te vinden: clave, conga, bass…? 🎶 Wat hoor je eigenlijk bij een 2–3 clave of 3–2 clave? 🎶 En hoe blijf je weten waar je bent als de muziek ineens nét even anders klinkt? Want dát vind ik interessant: Niet alleen… 1-2-3… 5-6-7… maar begrijpen WAAROM je danst waar je danst. En toen dacht ik… Waarom twijfelen eigenlijk zoveel ON1-dansers om ON2 te leren? 🤔 Is het omdat je denkt: — ON2 is veel moeilijker? — Iedereen hier danst ON1, dus waarom zou ik? — Ik raak straks compleet de tel kwijt? 😂 — Ik dans lekker ON1. Leave me alone, Vanessa. 🤣 — Of heb je het gewoon nog nooit geprobeerd? Want here’s the thing: ON1 hoeft niet weg omdat je ON2 leert. Je krijgt er gewoon een extra mogelijkheid bij. En dát vind ik juist heerlijk aan kunnen dansen: de muziek horen, begrijpen en kunnen kiezen hoe je erop wilt bewegen. ❤️ Dus ik ben ECHT benieuwd: Team ON1 Team ON2 BOTH BABY! ON1… maar stiekem wel nieuwsgierig naar ON2 👀 Behoor jij tot die laatste groep? KOM HET GEWOON PROBEREN. We hebben nog genoeg tijd om die overstap samen te maken. Ik leer je niet alleen WAT je moet dansen. Nopes. 😏 Ladies Styling is NOT about learning 48 complicated arm combinations so you can helicopter your way across the dance floor while everybody ducks for cover. 😂🚁 “I never knew I was supposed to dance on the balls of my feet. Now men don’t have to pull me anymore. I’m immediately there!” “I never know where I am in space when I turn. I feel like I’m going everywhere without knowing where I’ll end up… especially when men lead complicated combinations with lots of turns.” And THAT, ladies, is exactly the point. Stop di hasi yen kos dimas. Less is more. Learn how to MOVE your body. Hold your lines. FINISH your movements. Learn proper turn technique. Know where you are in space. Find your own balance. And learn to dance LIGHT. THAT makes Salsa Ladies Styling worth it. I said what I said.
