Energy Week at Penn, hosted by the Kleinman Center for Energy Policy and the Vagelos Institute for Energy Science and Technology, features 20 events over the course of five days across a wide array of disciplines that underscore Penn’s commitment to integrating energy policy, science, and technology.

These events offer students multiple chances to showcase their work, connect with energy alumni, and learn about energy-related opportunities on campus. Most notably, the VIPER & VIEST Annual Energy Week @Penn Poster Session, will occur on Wednesday, February 25, 2026 from 4:30-6:30pm in the VLEST building. This is a great opportunity to meet like-minded peers and faculty, showcase and get feedback on your work, learn about the breadth of energy research happening at Penn, and get a free Energy Week t-shirt, so make sure to register and save the date!

VIPER sophomore Ellen Hu (MSE & Physics '28) worked in Professor Cherie Kagan's lab for her first summer of research. Using processes like nanoimprint lithography with TiO2 nanocrystals, she fabricated samples with an optical sensing mechanism. These sensors will hopefully be deployed in the field and integrated with robots to reduce energy consumption in agriculture. by @viperatpenn

Penn's new home for energy science, the Vagelos Laboratory for Energy Science and Technology (VLEST), has earned a LEED Platinum certificate -- the highest standard in sustainable building design.

VLEST is a collaboration between the School of Arts & Sciences (SAS) and the School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) and also houses the Vagelos Institute for Engery Science and Technology (VIEST) and the Vagelos Integrated Program in Energy Research (VIPER). Designed by Behnisch Architekten, the building’s distinctive high-performance façade utilizes solar geometric sunshades to reduce energy usage and maximize natural daylight. The shades are a key feature of this campus gateway building at 32nd and Walnut streets.

The Vagelos Lab for Energy Science and Technology is one of three buildings at Penn to earn LEED certification recently. Amy Gutmann Hall was awarded LEED Gold and the Ott Center for Track and Field received LEED Silver.
