I love this defiant act from my apple tree this year. Refusing to be judged on volume or efficiency, it has waited until nearly October to give us one single, perfect apple. It is a pleasing metaphor for not just the cultural space we find ourselves in but this period of my life, where it would be so easy to be impatient or focus on the end point rather than the journey. I will honor the apple by approaching tonight’s crumble with a similarly outcome-focused intent. by @virginiahallwrites

I was there for Jack Thorne’s speech last night and it was so much more than this headline.

It was brave of him, to call out writers using AI to replace endeavor, to create the words. They are - I agree - failing to write. They are cheating their employers and their fellow writers and yes, it should be illegal.

But the onus of this can’t all be on individual writers. What of the editors, producers and executive boards who put the writer’s human toil through their own models? What of the model owners, who are selling us a story of ‘creativity’ with what appears to me to be the end goal of destroying the concept of copyright forever? It should be illegal, too, for anyone else to add the moist sheen of genAI to the results of anyone else’s human toil.

That’s why Jack’s idea of a ‘Copyright Institute’, a bit like the Bank of England but for the creative industry, is an absolute must. Why should the models not pay to use fragments of others’ work just as we do for extracts of music, writing and designs?

I would go further - a universal basic income for creatives so they can explore, make mistakes, learn and grow against the backdrop of ever more frictionless, optimised output.

This book is clever, funny, thought provoking. A love story that isn’t a love story. A commentary on masculinity and erasure. And above all a flawlessly immersive character study of a man who expected more on the brink of accepting disappointment. @luukekennnard chapeau to you for this novel and I hope it gets the shortlisting it deserves. Still chuckling to myself days later. by @virginiahallwrites
