Official account of VA’s Secretary of Health & Human Resources, Marvin Figueroa. Strengthening services. Supporting families. Expanding opportunity.
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Since I took the oath to serve as Virginia’s Secretary of Health and Human Resources, we’ve been doing a lot of work across the Commonwealth. Listening, solving problems, strengthening the services people rely on, and trying to make government work better for Virginians.

So, welcome to our page.

We’ll use this space to share what we’re working on, what’s changing across health and social services, resources that may be helpful to you and your family, and some of the work still ahead.

Follow along here, and sign up for our newsletter (https://lnkd.in/eNKjWChN) if you want to stay connected.

A lot has been done. There’s a lot more to do. Grateful that we get to serve you. by @virginiahhr

Comment “apply” to get a direct message to the application. We are looking for community and non-profit public servants interested in writing a new chapter for the Commonwealth! The Cannabis Equity Reinvestment Board (the Board) is established to directly address the impact of economic disinvestment, violence, and historical overuse of criminal justice responses to community and individual needs by providing resources to support local design and control of community-based responses to such impacts. Must be a Virginia resident. by @virginiahhr

My mother cared for other people’s families as a home health aide. Medicaid helped her take care of ours.

I know what that support can mean for a family working to get ahead. That’s why I joined Protect Our Care, @repmcclellan, and @repbobbyscott in Williamsburg to speak out against the health care cuts in H.R. 1.

The current congress made a choice that puts more worry on people already trying to make the paycheck last. Losing coverage doesn’t make an illness go away. It makes getting help harder.

Under Governor Spanberger’s leadership, we’re working to help eligible Virginians stay covered, make the process easier to navigate, and fix problems that keep people from getting care.

People should be able to count on their government to help them move forward, not make tomorrow harder. by @virginiahhr

This National Primary Care Week, we’re recognizing the healthcare providers who help keep Virginians and our communities healthy and strong.

Primary care is the foundation of a healthier Commonwealth — connecting Virginians to trusted care, preventing illness, and helping people get the support they need to thrive.

Virginia is committed to strengthening primary care, expanding access, and building a healthcare system that works for every Virginian. by @virginiahhr

The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) will always be home.

Returning for the first time as Virginia’s Secretary of Health and Human Resources meant a lot to me. I shared our work to improve access to care and the responsibility we have as Latino leaders to turn opportunity into something that reaches beyond ourselves.

It was also good to reconnect with friends and meet people beginning their own careers in service. I remember being at that stage and how much it meant when someone made time for me. I want them to go further than we have. Part of our work is making sure they can.

Gracias, CHCI. Siempre es bueno volver a casa. by @virginiahhr

The people who write public policy are often far removed from the people who live with its consequences. A decision made in Washington or Richmond can determine whether someone gets healthcare, qualifies for benefits, or finds support for a mental health need, yet the people making those decisions rarely see what happens on the other side.

Marvin B. Figueroa has spent his career on both sides of that divide. Born in La Ceiba, Honduras, and raised in the Bronx by a mother who worked as a home care worker, he grew up close to the realities that public programs are meant to address. Today, as Secretary of Health and Human Resources for the Commonwealth of Virginia, he oversees the agencies responsible for public health, Medicaid, behavioral health, social services, disability services, and benefits serving millions of Virginians.

For Figueroa, that connection to the people behind the policy is not an abstraction. It has informed a career focused on healthcare, social services, and the work of turning public policy into programs people can use.

Behind every debate about food assistance is someone wondering what they will eat tonight. We cannot lose sight of that. I spent time with the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore and partners who are doing the work every day to make sure families have food on the table.

We are working alongside them and others across the Commonwealth to make sure working families who are eligible continue to get the help they need, even as federal changes make that harder. by @virginiahhr

The Eastern Shore can feel far from the center of Virginia’s attention. But spending the day there reminded me that some of the best ideas are already being built locally.

I saw people training their neighbors for health care jobs. Bringing dental care into schools. Reusing existing spaces instead of waiting for perfect conditions. Finding practical ways to keep care closer to home.

That is the kind of work I want us to build on across Virginia. Sometimes the best thing government can do is listen closely, support what is already working, and help good ideas go further. taken in Eastern Shore of Virginia by @virginiahhr

The American people are facing a cost-of-living crisis that leaves them struggling to afford food, housing, health care, child care and more.

I joined @sentimkaine, @dannyavula, @virginiahhr and more for a roundtable to discuss how our state and local officials and safety-net providers are handling increased demand with fewer resources, and what Congress can do to help. The Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth (@healthyyouthva) is about getting upstream. The earlier we help young people make healthy choices and avoid harmful behaviors, the better chance we have of improving health for a lifetime. taken in Emporia, Virginia by @virginiahhr
