Beyond the Shadows: Poetic Vision | Two-Screen Installation Film

This one meant a lot. Made with an incredible team that held it down every step of the way.
The film opens as part of Gideon Appah’s solo exhibition with @gallery1957

Set in a chromatic world shaped by soft tones, gentle rhythms, and moments that feel both intimate and infinite

Beyond the Shadows reflects on identity, Blackness, the Black body, and future ideas.

See the film and the paintings that shaped it, this week at 5–7 Rue Bailly, Paris.

To Busua — for the light, the sea, the stillness.

BTS | Beyond the Shadows.

Sea, rocks, sweat, stillness, early mornings, long takes, spontaneous magic.

The real work happened here — with the crew, the cast, the community that held us.

Beyond grateful for everyone who showed up, stayed late, carried gear, gave ideas, made space, held the light (literally and figuratively). 🖤

Over the past months, I and my team @visioninview have been immersed in putting together this material from @opensocietyfoundations Global convening For The Restitution of African Cultural Heritage - Heritage is humanity.

This cause, restitution of African artifacts is only realized when we all accept that heritage indeed is humanity. What africa lost is memory which created cultural gaps.

Having no clue of what we were before in its entirety and having our histories begin from slavery. Colonialism ripped us from knowing the Africa before colonialism, where these artifacts were symbols of our culture, hence mitigating Africa’s civilization on the parallels of growth and evolution.

The return of the objects cant fully restore what has been lost but it is a good start to repair culture and grant more access to the future yet to come

Thank you to @veronikachatsss and @ibrahimaaniang for such a splendid convening and to the entire team at OpenSociety Foundations and all stakeholders involved

Bez zrozumienia przeszłości nie ma przyszłości - właśnie dlatego wsparliśmy swoim grantem działalność Ghańskiej fundacji @si.hene , która zajmuje się archiwami królewskimi i wspólnotowymi, historią mówioną, dokumentacją kultury i badaniami, a do tego prowadzi stypendia, wystawy, warsztaty i zasoby cyfrowe. Bo dbanie o dziedzictwo jest ważnym elementem budowania i utrzymywania tożsamości narodowej 🇬🇭

Without understanding the past, there is no future. That’s why we supported the work of the Ghanaian foundation @si.hene with a grant. Si Hene looks after royal and community archives, oral history, cultural documentation and research, and also runs fellowships, exhibitions, workshops and digital resources. Caring for heritage is an important part of building and sustaining national identity 🇬🇭 by @visioninview

Ghana! Dreaming Independence (1957–1976) is now open at @rencontresarles .

Last November, we gathered at Si Hene in Accra for The Reading Room — a workshop where archivists, artists, curators and community members sat with Ghana’s independence-era photographic archive and spoke freely about what they saw, referencing two books — Paul Strand’s Ghana: An African Portrait and The Roadmakers by Willis Bell and Efua Sutherland.

Swipe through to hear them.

ART RESIDENCY: KWAKU YARO & JAMES MISHIO LOFT ART GALLERY.

Two of ours.

We’re proud to share that @kwaku_yaro and @james.mishio have joined @loftartgallery’s new artist residency programme in Marrakech, a four-month period conceived as a space for research, dialogue, and experimentation. The joint residency will be accompanied by two solo exhibitions in the gallery’s spaces later in 2026.

The programme brings together international perspectives within the Moroccan context, creating conditions for genuine exchange between artists, materials, and local histories. It’s exactly the kind of space we believe artists deserve.

We’ll be watching, cheering, and sharing the journey. An exhibition of outcomes is coming later this year, so stay close. 🇲🇦 🇬🇭

There is room to interpret, room to speak, and room to challenge.

Five days inside the 61st Venice Biennale — what I saw, what I made, and what I wish I had done differently.

Ruinous — Tiona Nekkia McClodden at the 61st Venice @labiennale .

Seven of eight moving image works that caught my attention across the Biennale.

A two-channel video placed apart like stereo speakers, McClodden playing an abstract painter contemplating a work she has mixed feelings about. Pleasure and pain intertwining in the same frame. Hurt and rejection threaded with flashes of joy. The moving image holding what language alone cannot, the depth of longing and the way it marks us, sometimes forever.

Ñi Demoon Ñoo Delusi (Those Who Left Are Those Who Return) — @tuan.andrew.nguyen at the 61st Venice @labiennale .

Four of eight moving image works that caught my attention across the Biennale.

A two-channel video built around Bouba Chinois, one of West Africa’s most infamous bandits, weaving intimate interviews, spoken narratives, and archival material into something that is equal parts myth and testimony. The work traces the generational wounds left on African and Asian communities by French colonial power, and finds in the story of one life lived at the margins a thread toward healing. Archive, fiction, and testimony held together in the same frame.

The kind of filmmaking that reminds you why the moving image matters. This is the fourth in a series of eight moving image works I documented across the Giardini and Arsenale during opening week. Each one a different argument for what film can hold that other forms can’t.

Interlaced — @bernisearle at the 61st Venice @labiennale .

Three of eight moving image works that caught my attention across the Biennale.

A three-channel video filmed in the Gothic Chamber of Bruges’ Town Hall a city built on the textile trade, in a country built on colonial brutality. Searle covers herself in gold then veils herself in black lace, the body revealing and concealing itself against a score drawn from the Muslim call to prayer echoing from the belfry. When the gold-painted hands hold the lace, the weight of Leopold’s Congo comes into the frame without a word being spoken. Moving image doing what only moving image can do.

Venice. Rain, queues, baby bottles hanging from trees, a coat that says everything. Five days moving through the Giardini and Arsenale the kind of looking that makes you want to go back to work.
