The @timbertrailnz is more than a journey through the forest. It’s a journey through history. 🌿

Once one of the last areas of native forest in the North Island to be extensively logged, Pureora’s story is one of timber, protest, conservation and new beginnings.

In 1978, environmentalists climbed into the treetops to protest the continued logging of the native forest, helping protect what remained for future generations. Decades later, a new chapter began with the opening of the Timber Trail in 2013.

Following remnants of old logging tramways alongside purpose-built tracks, the 84km trail now winds through the forest that people once fought to save, crossing spectacular suspension bridges and revealing pieces of its past along the way.

A landscape once shaped by logging is now a place to explore, protect and appreciate. by @visitruapehu
