INTRODUCING VIVANT SELECTIONS

When I started Wine and Food Solutions five years ago, it began life as side project coinciding with Semi-Permanent at 92 Smith.
Wine & Food Solutions was a business name I already had registered, and it seemed like an easy solution.

Over the subsequent years, the business has grown and changed, as have I, and the name no longer made sense.

Vivant / A French noun or adjective meaning living, alive or lively

Vivant Selections, a new name to more accurately describe the wines and makers we represent. by @vivantselections

HELP US NAME THE CHICKEN

We’re asking for a little help to find a name for our warehouse chicken. Leave a suggestion in the comments.

@jaymiewallace and I will confer, and the winning name will be announced on Monday 26th October. We’ll send the winner a bottle of wine (as long as you’re located in Aus)

You’re probably wondering why there is a ceramic chicken in our warehouse.

The chicken was gifted to Paul and I (maybe repurposed is a better word) by Christian at Embla eleven years ago when we did a little pop up called Semi-Permanent. It was then packed up and went into storage with all the other equipment, remaining there until last year.

Unboxed prior to the opening of South End; glassware, decanters and some kitchen equipment found its way to south King St. When I offered the chicken it was met with a firm NO. And so it found its way onto the rack where it happily sits next to the Champagne.

The lovely @gem_mer visited us last week and asked about the chicken. And here we are.

Once we find a name for our chicken you will see her make appearances with wine match recommendations. taken in Marrickville, New South Wales by @vivantselections

ITS ARRIVED
Another Wine - Rethinking Winegrowing in a time of ecological crisis; by Valentin Morel

Now Available in Australia, you can find it our website or if in Melbourne @samuelpepyswine and @booksforcooksau

This is a book for vignerons and winemakers. It’s a book for those who taste, critique, buy, and sell one. It’s a book for the wine lover, the drinker, the collector. It’s a book for the nature enthusiast, the tech geek, the political debater, the punk-rock aficionado. It’s a book for the town mouse and the country mouse. It’s a book for those who love concepts and those who prefer stories. It’s a book focused on the life and vines of a domain in the small Jura village of Paligny, “the capital of Comte” (population 4089 in 2022), and it’s a universal work that resonates with everyone.

As you might have guessed, Another Wine is much more than a book about hybrid grapevines. Or more precisely, the question of hybrids is a lens through which Valentin Morel explores our concrete way of being in the world, in an increasingly abstract and digitalized society. With disarming sincerity, a sharp mind, and rare humility, Valentin recounts his dreams and setbacks, his illusions and discoveries, his difficulties, his doubts, and his inspirations for making a living as a winemaker who returned to his roots after the lure of the big city and his time in the French civil service. He wants us to pause for a moment and reflect on the relationship between life and livelihood.

So you enter this book as you would a novel. Because beyond being a talented wine maker at his estate, Les Pieds sur Terre, Valentin Morel has a beautiful writing style. You smile and frown while reading his personal introspection, this singular journey to which we can all relate in one way or another. Those ideas will undoubtably not be universally accepted, but not all readers will be able to refuse the invitation to uncork a bottle of “Broken Hearts are for Assholes Rosé” turn on the volume to blast Frank Zappa‘s guitar and discuss until dawn everything that separates us, and everything that you unites us - Pascaline Lepeltier

Salutations; its that time of the year again where the heads turn for the laser beams that are the wines from the Southern Rhone; don’t be fooled sometimes paleish sometimes rose or not but always full of energy and concentration. A disciple of the lizard king himself (Eric Pfifferling / L’Anglore) - Romain Le Bars farms 9ha of Tavel and the surrounds producing wines of clarity, concentration and detail.

Paired with some Pipi’s the kitcho’s got in…somewhere between lunch and a minor spiritual awakening.

@thibaud_capellaro one of the Northern Rhone’s next generation rising stars and a producer much of Europe is talking about.

Thibaud doesn’t come from a wine background. After completing business studies, he chose to pursue his passion for wine. He honed his craft with internships at Andre Perret and Guy Bernard in the Northern Rhone as well as here in Australia with Adam & Pip Foster at Syrahmi in early 2018.

Returning to France, he started his domaine later that year with the purchase of two small plots in Côte-Rôtie and Saint Joseph. The estate is now a little over 2 hectares, all farming adheres to organic practices.

He supplements the small production of estate wines with negoce fruit, sourcing only organic grapes from two of the finest growers in the area, Gerald Oustric of Le Mazel (Ardeche) and Clusel Roch in Ampuis.

With the price per hectare that Côte-Rôtie commands, to farm in this way and make wines without intervention is not only conviction, but a belief in your ability.  Thibaud Capellaro is shaking up the system and producing pure and elegant wines of precision.

For those that know me, one may say I have a book addiction. It runs deep for wine books as much as for cookbooks.

So I was pretty pleased when Valentin told me the English translation of his book was ready to release.

Copies of Another Wine have just left France and are due to arrive mid to late September.

We’re taking pre-orders for despatch at the end of September. Send us an email - info@vivantselections.com or DM if you’re interested in securing a copy (Australian residents only)

I began working with Valentin back in 2017.
He has conviction and passion for farming and winemaking without chemical intervention.
His patience ensures his wines are precise and detailed. A deep thinker and champion of a new way in a world where the climate crisis is the reality we live in.

Through the story of his Jura estate, Les Pieds sur Terre, Valentin Morel explores our relationship with work, nature, progress, tradition, and the way we choose to live.

With a unique perspective on hybrid grape varieties and the future of viticulture, as well as reflection on work, meaning, and modern society, it’s essential for all wine lovers

Part memoir, part vineyard chronicle, part social reflection, Another Wine invites readers to question the systems that shape our lives and to reconsider what truly matters.

Pascaline Lepeltier wrote in the preface:
“This is much more than a book about hybrid grapevines”

“What is true for the wine industry proves to be universal.” taken in Sydney, Australia by @vivantselections
