Diary of a Pianist, Mom, Friend: striving to learn, improve & enjoy the ride. In a 🌎 where you can be anything, choose to be kind. 🌈

POSTS STORIES REELS

My parents have been in assisted living for the past six weeks, and they always ask me to play the piano. It is one of the few things that brings smiles to their faces and it usually draws a little crowd, too. I used to worry that the pieces I knew weren’t good or practiced enough. Now I play whatever I can remember, mistakes and all.

Today, on our way home from a trip, the hubs and I took turns playing the piano at the SLC airport. Afterward, someone stopped by and gave us this chocolate from Paris. She’d missed her connecting flight home but said, “At least I got to hear you both play.”

The piano was tricky and we weren’t exactly in prime shape, but I’m learning that perfect isn’t really the point. by @vivigirl222

A medical emergency landed my dad in the hospital, and I’m feeling especially grateful this morning and cautiously hopeful that he will be okay.

I would be hard-pressed to navigate any of this without my sisters, whose calm, strength, and love - especially over these most recent years - have given me an even deeper respect for them. I’m also profoundly thankful for my parents’ thoughtful planning: having their advance directives and legal documents in order allowed my doctor-sister to make important decisions in the moment.

For those in my age group, I am realizing this is one of the greatest gifts you can give the people who love you: make a plan, put your wishes and documents in order, and talk about them before a crisis arrives.

And about the nurses in charge of my dad’s care: they are truly angels. Their kindness, gentleness, patience, and care mean more than I can say. Thank you. 💗💗💗 by @vivigirl222

Today I worked on a video for a Juilliard K-12 Project and touched on the more wholesome values of participating in a competition: stepping on stage is already a sign of courage, preparing for a competition brings growth and focus, and sharing your work develops confidence. Yes, winning a prize is exciting and wonderful and prizes matter, but even without a trophy, you can walk away with new skills, new feedback and a stronger sense of who you are as an artist. If you’ve been thinking about it, don’t be afraid to try something new! #naejuilliard by @vivigirl222

Bingo and jump-roping at Lake Elmore. I am grateful for this small town community, where life’s pleasures are savored, and creativity and mindfulness thrive. by @vivigirl222

With my dear friend and founder of Silver Music in NYC 🎶

Sitting in on Ellen’s teaching reminded me: she is brilliant! ✨

Especially in the world of classical music where existing positions can be limited, I think there is something so important to learn from her journey in creating community and fulfilling a need. She not only created her own space but opened doors for so many others.

Over the past 20 years, Ellen has built a school that has guided thousands of young musicians in playing their first notes, nurtured their growth, and created a home for dozens of artist teachers. I’m so proud of her! ❤️ @silvermusicnyc by @vivigirl222

#summerperformingartswithjuilliard 2026! Always a gift to share music and artistry with young people, while working with friends I’ve known since I was a young person myself! Grateful for the amazing Voice team, engaged students from around the world, rainbows and pool time! Congratulations to us all, and especially Seth Baer who has guided this program for 10 amazing years. Till next time! by @vivigirl222

My heart is glowing from Summer Performing Arts with Juilliard - celebrating 10 years of creativity, collaboration and community, and I’m so grateful to be a part of it. 🎶✨

Our young artists stepped into big roles, trusted each other and worked through challenges to make their music shine. This program is a rare place where joy, rigor and care can live together, and that’s what makes it so special. 🌟🧡

Wishing everyone wellness and continued musical adventures. Keep in touch, safe travels home and I hope our paths cross again soon! 🌍💕🎵 @juilliardschool @windermereprepschool #naejuilliard by @vivigirl222
