Movie Recommendation ~ Black Girl (1966) Directed by Ousmane Sembène, the film follows Diouana, a 21 year old Senegalese woman who takes a job as a nanny for a French family in Dakar. The job is good, the family treats her well, and she genuinely likes them. So when they ask her to come work for them in France she says yes, leaving her family and her boyfriend behind, excited about everything Europe has promised her. She arrives and the door closes behind her and everything changes. She is no longer a nanny. She cooks, she cleans, she serves their guests who stare at her like she is something to look at rather than someone to speak to. The Madame who once seemed kind becomes someone else entirely. Diouana has no money to leave and the family makes clear she is not going anywhere. Sembène made this film in 1966, one year after Senegal gained independence from France, and he was not being subtle. This powerful film is a devastating portrait of post-colonial power dynamics and the continued exploitation of Africans long after colonialism officially ended.
