Kol Kandoli Temple #Jammu

———

Long ago in Nagrota, a little five year old girl played with some children. It was a hot summer day. The children became very thirsty, but all the nearby streams were dry. Seeing her friends cry, the girl smiled and took out a small silver bowl. This bowl was called a “kol”. She began to shake it gently in her hands. This shaking was known as “kandoli”.
She touched the dry ground with the bowl. Suddenly, a spring of cool water burst out of the earth. The happy children drank the water. Right next to the spring, a holy Shiva Linga appeared.
The villagers realized this child was the goddess Mata Vaishno Devi. Today, the Kol Kandoli Temple stands at this spot. It is the first temple pilgrims visit before starting their journey up the mountain to her holy cave. taken in Kol kandoli temple . Nagrota by @voiceofdogras

Across India, Navratri has many regional expressions: Bommai Golu in the South, Durga pandals in the East, and Dandiya and Garba in the West. In the Jammu region, one cherished tradition is Kaan Sakhiyan, a girls-led celebration of devotion, friendship and community.

As Navratri approaches, neighbourhood girls form groups and decide whose home will host the Goddessa choice known as Mata Rakhni Hai. Together, they make and decorate a clay idol of Durga Ma. One girl becomes the Pachailan, or priestess, guiding the group through the eight days of worship.

The girls gather water, tend the saankh (barley shoots), light diyas and incense, sing bhente and perform aarti. Each evening, they share food brought from their homes. On Navami, after Kanya Pujan, they enact Kaan Sakhiyan: one girl becomes Kaan or Kanha (Krishna), while the others become his sakhiyan. Families and neighbours gather to watch.

The celebration ends with Babru and puris, the sharing of prasad, and the immersion of the Mata idol and saankh in the river.
More than a festival, Kaan Sakhiyan brings generations together and passes a living Duggar tradition from one generation to the next. Once part of village and town life, it is now fading from many cities. Let’s remember, share and celebrate it.

On the last of Pitrupaksh on Sarv Pitru Amavasya, the Dogras of Jammu, do what they call ‘Pitrein gi Bardana’ meaning sending off the ancestors in peace and with gratitude.

A diya is lit and kept on a ghee smeared roti along with a stick for the ancestors. Both representing a wish that the ancestor is fed and travels well on their onward journey.

Water is offered from the entrance of the house onwards to the street. Forgiveness is sought from the ancestor for any mistakes and prayers offered so that they may travel in peace and joy. Gratitude and reverence for everything they have done and a wish that they continue to bless the family. 🙏🏼

Dogras of Jammu region celebrate Naag Panchami on the Panchami of Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapad month.

Jammu is the land of the Naagas and Naag worship is centuries old in the region. Not only are Naag revered and killing them considered a sin but they are also considered the Kings of the land.

Naag or serpents are powerful representational symbols of cosmic energy in Vedic literature as seen in pauraanik katha and iconography associated with Shiva and Vishnu. Naagas are also an intrinsic part of the local Duggar traditions and have been depicted in various art forms like Basohli painting as well as carvings on stone especially near water bodies.

Highly revered Duggar folk deities like Baba Kaliveer ji and Raja Mandlik are also shown as having close association with Naag.

The King of Kings, Serpent King Maharaj Vasuki Naag ji is worshipped in a unique way in Bhaderwah and though Bhaderwah is dotted with Naga Temples, the main Vasuki ji Temple in the Bhaderwah town has stunning six feet idols in black stone set on an elaborately carved stone.

Considered to have been the original dwellers of Jammu Kashmir, the influence of Nagas remains on the history and culture of the region.
