POST CONTEMPORARY SURVIVAL STRATEGIES
In broken timeframe, the future has already arrived — unevenly, violently, absurdly, and yet somehow predicted. It comes in different shapes and forms-through our screens, or algorithms, background deamons, pricy wars, horrific news, a missing windows of a contreate wall, a games of thrones, and trolls, human sacrifies for sake of other’s safety, through heat rising from the pavement, or plastic in our bloodstream analysed as new data. El Niño the oracle synched in collapse, political extremism from each side of the globe, technological acceleration, and yet needing cheap labour, loneliness, fear of other, Onlyfans celebrity accounts-for your fans only! Exhaustion, displacement, but nowhere to run, migration labeled -crime against humanity!
A sharade, grotesque, backdrop of a motion picture of a bunch of people dancing till they die…
But lets rewind and come back here NOW. The festival is aiming to make a distingtion between what is real and what is performed.
Lets call this condition post contemporary. As the human condition has been depicted and ceased, not because the contemporary has ended, but because it has become impossible to contain. Too many realities happening at once, the more crises overlap. Do we have the deal right, or is our brain supposed to authomatically expand?
The smell of burned petol reminds me of the future, any yet I lost my smell during COVID-19. In GOD WE TRUST- remained most popular psalm of the holly currency in book keeping…
Sofia Art Week 9 invites you to this terr(OR)itorry through witnessing — performance as experiment, intevention, encounter, rehearsal, resistance, ritual, failure, invitation, care and possibility.
Our bubble becomes our desire to test drive
 how we might exist differently.

Introducing artists SAW SOFIA ART WEEK 9
Ål Nik [Alexandra Nikolova // Александра Николова] @aaaalnik is an artist who weaves the practices of illustration, graphic design, artistic research, experimental publishing and facilitation together to bring things up. She holds a Master’s degree in Fine Arts and Media Design: Experimental Publishing, awarded by the Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam, where she explored how to create safe and accessible space for makers to use sound in their practice. Alexandra has a full grasp of how to use art to help people visualise and see key ideas and complex information through hand-drawn illustration, shared spaces, and indiependent publishing; and she uses those skills to support causes led by organisations such as Emprove Foundation, Nomadways, Fine Acts and more.

In the context of Sofia Art Week 9, Alexandra is bringing her collective game Our Future Is Somewhere Here©, which is created for people who are interested in exploring potential future scenarios and are open to asking themselves questions about the relation between past, present, and future. Created during an art residency in Nicosia (Cyprus), the game was played at Dutch Design Week 2025 (the Netherlands) by more than 60 players in 20+ game sessions. At SAW9, the guests can join sessions, and explore the game with Alexandra on the spot. taken in Æther by @voindevoin

Olga Volodina @artvolodina

Olga Volodina is a conceptual photographer and performance artist working with social and political themes: censorship, propaganda, gender stereotypes, human rights, the place of human beings in the world of technology. Born in Uzbekistan and raised in Russia, she spent 13 years in Thailand and now lives in Sofia, Bulgaria. Her work has been presented in 23 countries across Asia, Europe, Africa and the Americas.
For the festival she will present an installation and a performance called:
THIRSTY AI
How much water does a machine drink?
Every question asked to ChatGPT, every image generated by a neural network costs clean drinking water taken from non-renewable sources. Corporations train their models while half of humanity lives with water shortages. More than two billion people have no access to clean drinking water, and every day a thousand children die because of it.
In the performance THIRSTY AI, Olga Volodina makes this invisible consumption tangible.
The performance is part of the project The Impact of Technological Progress on Humanity in the Future. The project raises questions that have no answers yet: who benefits from robotics and artificial intelligence, whether this is a path to human development or its degradation, whether humanity needs machines that think, create and work instead of it. Photographs, stop-motion films, installations and performances speak of the price of progress: unemployment, the depletion of the planet’s resources, and a human being ever less capable of creating with their own hands. taken in Æther by @voindevoin

Introducing artists SAW 9
Pablo Alvez Artinprocess @pabloalvezartinprocess
Pablo is a performance artist (UK/PT/BE) who started performing after he met Steven Cohen. He completed a PhD in poverty economics in 2012, but his artisic explorations led him to complete a 2nd PhD recently, this time around on performance art and ethics. He realises ethics is not enough, and that the divide between performance art and real-world politics is a farce, so now his aim is to create impure
performance art which is not only meaningful, but also
purposeful, bodily, touching and hopefully experimental, too. He does not know if he will succeed.

For SAW he brings a new creation, “The Full Monty”, the first installment of his ACTIVE UNAGGRESSIVE cycle. It mixes cabaret with pamplet distribution and participatory lecture: songs will be sung, papers will be shared and questions will be asked. Warning: might contain traces of nuts 🌰. taken in Æther by @voindevoin

Rorem
Rorem is a contemporary Bulgarian-Dutch visual artist whose work explores the boundaries between classical heritage and conceptual deconstruction.
His professional journey began with an academic education at the National Academy of Arts in Bulgaria, where he mastered classical form, anatomy, and composition. The search for new visual territories led him to the Netherlands—the land of light and the Old Masters. There, he completed his higher education, encountering the radical approach of Western conceptual art, which fundamentally transformed his artistic thinking.
For many years, the artist has exhibited his work in galleries and art forums across Europe and North America.
A few years ago, the artist took a radical turn, returning to the roots of his inspiration under a new pseudonym and with an entirely transformed visual language.

In the series “Narcissus - Deconstructing Caravaggio,” the author borrows the drama and psychological depth of the Baroque master to subject the concept of light and shadow (chiaroscuro) to a complete deconstruction. The light in his works no longer merely illuminates form but shatters it, while shadow transforms into an independent conceptual volume. Through this new approach, the artist fragments the classical image to create dynamic, mystical, and deeply psychological spaces that capture the spirit and fragmentation of contemporary man. by @voindevoin

Ivan Borisov @ivan.borisov.5494
He studied at the University of art and design in Cluj, Romania. He obtained his master degree in sculpture department from the same university. In Vienna he did a specialisation of the craft.
Today he lives and works in Sofia.
For SAW he is presenting a performance, titled “Grafting.” It is an unconscious reference to the movement and ideas of Viennese Actionism. These are grounded in direct engagement with reality specifically, the use of the body as a subject of exploration, and the resulting artistic actions are recognized as ritual practices. taken in Sofia, Bulgaria by @voindevoin
