Posted @withregram • @gasfoundation Towards the end of last month, we were delighted to welcome Bulgarian-Nigerian ethnobotanist Jonn Gale (@balkanjonn) for an immersive 12-week residency, structured as part of her PhD placement. Based in London, her interdisciplinary practice spans photography, moving image, sound, research, and ecology. Her work combines archival analysis, ethnobotanical research, and sensory-focused visual ethnography, to explore multi-species relationships and the historical role of plants. As part of her practice-led PhD at Birkbeck, University of London (@birkbeckuol), in collaboration with the Linnean Society of London (@linneansociety), she is currently investigating the overlooked contributions of Black and Indigenous naturalists to 18th- and 19th-century botanical knowledge, working to develop decolonial approaches to archival research.

“I hope to explore and document local plant knowledge, traditional agricultural practices, and the cultural narratives tied to these traditions. My aim is to use my ethnobotanical practice to address challenges related to biocultural conservation and the transmission of traditional plant knowledge in Nigeria.”

In regards to the student protests in Amsterdam and on the campus of many universities globally, De Appel Amsterdam shared this important work from their archives. Yes, we SHOULD be glad if we can demonstrate and embrace it as a principle human right.

 • @de_appel These weeks we are reminded of this photo of a performance in de Appel's archive from 1979 by artist Endre Tót, 𝘞𝘦 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘨𝘭𝘢𝘥 𝘪𝘧 𝘸𝘦 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘥𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘦, and we draw parallels with the present moment. We wonder; can we demonstrate for justice, when these gatherings are repeatedly and violently taken down? is protest still a right permitted by the state? can we be glad to demonstrate?

Endre Tót’s work was part of the manifestation 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘬𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘴, organized by de Appel in 1979 with artists, art historians and -critics from the Netherlands, former East-Germany, Hungary, Poland and former Yugoslavia. 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘬𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘴 comprised lectures, discussions, performances, installations, video, film, historical documentation and an exhibition of photo works. The event sought to break with the one-way traffic of Western artists traveling to the East by inviting artists from Eastern Bloc countries to Amsterdam. The exhibition catalogue was reprinted and published by Roma Publications (@roma.publications). taken in Amsterdam, Netherlands by @schoolofkindness

Youssef El Idrissi @glitcharmony

"Earlier this September, I have been invited to the UN International Democracy Day by @eedemocracy to speak about our work in @koun.aktif and the importance of culture and arts in making democracy real.

While highlighting the repression in freedom of speech in Morocco, namely by mentioning the case of my friend journalist Omar Radi @rotalus , I made it clear that the notion of "democracy" isn't a Western invention, and it's a natural consequence of all indigenous cultures, and how can we #decolonize democracy itself from the misleading narrative that democracy has been imported from somewhere else.

By reminding if the EU is serious about making "democracy" lasts, it is mandatory to make reparations to its ex-colonies, make formal apologies and stop the systemic exploitation and loothing, this is the only way that can allow real bridges to be created between the South and the North.

Unfortunately, after this meeting, by seeing the systemic support of the EU to an apartheid, racist, and t3rr0r!st state and neglecting basic rights to a dehumanized population, all I can see is the same ongoing colonial project, and no real intention to fix the past - let alone the present.

I hope this message will reach its destination, and that true #justice will prevail, so #lastingpeace can find its right place.

Big thanks to @eedemocracy for the invitation, and allowing me to share my ideas and views to a diverse audience of activists, analysts, journalists and politicians."

School of Kindness stands with Palestine and supports all action to decolonize Palestine.

Repost from @le18marrakech

***
We join and undersign the "No peace without decolonization” letter by the North African decolonial network, which collected more than 500 signatures in two days from professors, researchers, artists, and other actors in the region and from friends throughout the world, expressing concern regarding the genocidal escalation in Gaza against the Palestinians, and urging a peaceful course of action.
