A Dozen Daughters: For my daughter on her first birthday.

Charlie Grace, I had many ‘daughters’ before you, of course none that I have loved in the infinite ways I love you. If there is ever a day that you need help, this is a call to people everywhere to listen, to believe you, and to do something.

When I started coaching runners, I did not appreciate the responsibility that comes with fostering a community. I now know that more important than offering people a space to feel strong, is offering them a space to feel safe. We have all heard stories of sexual harassment in sport; commonly in running. As one of the founders of @ne_trackclub it has been a privilege to be a woman that other women trust. When they tell their stories, their eyes hold an undeniable cry for action; “Please. Believe me. Do something.”

To date, eleven women have come to me asking for help. And that’s only the eleven who have been brave enough to speak up. I can only imagine how many more have been discouraged by seeing how commonly these cries for help go ignored. Or worse, how often women are retaliated against and treated differently for coming forward— proving them right for hesitating and deterring others from coming forward too.

It has occurred to me that when people learn of these behaviors second hand, they have the luxury to decide whether it was bad enough for them to act. I am tired of people questioning how old these girls were; asking whether they took legal action as some sort of measure of legitimacy; looking stunned in the moment only to stay comfortably removed from the fray. I am sick of doing the convincing on behalf of these women. And I refuse to keep the company of those who don’t get involved.

I have battled doubts that I did not handle these situations appropriately. I have faced taunting and ridicule for being an evangelist for women’s safety in sport: “too much; too loud; not our problem.” On the other side of that, as a true mommy now, I have never been more sure that this is the thing to be loud about.

For Charlie and for women everywhere; a call to everyone: Believe them. Do something.

Three kids. One morning at the @natgeomuseum 🌎✨ Big hit with the little explorers and one of my new fave spots in the city. The best addition to the DC kid circuit, and one of the most intentional, thoughtful, creative spaces I have visited in the world full stop.

She was four months old on her first day— March 6, 2023. I cried in the parking lot, then sat in the parking garage the entire day, just in case. 907 days later, she’s the one waving goodbye first.

A lot has changed in those days. She has a brother now. I’m a different mom than the one who couldn’t drive away that morning: steadier, a little less afraid, stretched in every direction. She grew up, and so did I.

To everyone at Bambini who fed her, rocked her, taught her, and loved her through every single one of those days: thank you. You got the very first version of her, and you gave her back to us bigger, braver, and funnier than we could have imagined.

Congratulations to our Bambini graduate. I could not be more proud or more in awe of you. You have taught me more in 4 years than I could learn in a lifetime.

First annual Drakesting family vacation. So lucky to spend a few days with my bestie sis @nstepniiak and dearest friends @samme.drake @drakeinthehouse ✨💕

Absolutely loved this trip. It was happy good vibes and traveling with friends with kiddos is just the way to go ALL DAY. Everyone gets the tantrums, everyone’s kids are everyone’s kids, and the least planned moments are the most special and fun. Heart and cup are so full. taken in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware by @vonksss

The best AND.

Two kids under four will bring you to your damn knees more times in a day than you can count. Vacation photos look like swimming pools and ice cream but the tantrums, the sunscreen battles, the overstim and constant movement bc of [all of our!] energy levels is a lot.

But at the end of the day if you can be horizontal and say:

We did that. Next to someone you love. In a beautiful place. With a house full of family who support you and are healthy. You’re doing quite alright.

That’s a wrap on Kesting fam vaca 2026! Next year we will have a 4 and 2 year old and maybe we will breathe but also probably definitely not.😅
