Though my background has been largely rooted in women’s eveningwear, menswear has always been a quiet fascination of mine—something I’ve returned to instinctively over the last few years. Still, I never could have imagined that my first fully tailored suit set, reinterpreted with a distinctly modern edge, would make its debut on the Grammys red carpet. Seeing it worn by my incredibly talented friend Brian @vouski , on a night that celebrated his nomination for Best Opera Recording, made the moment all the more meaningful.

Inspired by his character in “An American Soldier”, Danny Chen, the design pays homage to the army uniform he wears while reimagining it through a contemporary lens. The modernized navy wool blazer features a strong, architectural shoulder with army epaulettes, a cinched waist, and an unexpected back cutout, finished with star-embossed gold button shanks and a Chinese dragon brooch honoring his heritage. Paired with fluid, wide-leg trousers trimmed with gold piping, the look balances structure and ease, masculinity and softness, East meets West, pushing tailoring into a more expressive, emotional space.

Thank you, Brian, for trusting me with this moment and allowing me to be part of your Grammys journey. Congratulations, my friend. I love you so much.

Thanks @wnyc @newsounds for posting and sharing this! 🙏❤️
“Hear a piece from the opera, An American Soldier by Chinese-American composer Huang Ruo, whose libretto was written by David Henry Hwang (M. Butterfly and Yellow Face). The opera is based on the true story of Chinese-American Army Pvt. Danny Chen, who was found dead in a guard tower at his base in Afghanistan in 2011. He had been mercilessly hazed and abused by his fellow soldiers, and took his own life. Listen to the “Moon Duet”, in a recording by the American Composer’s Orchestra from the 2024 PAC NYC.”

This Memorial Day we honor Pvt. Danny Chen, whose death due to his enduring racial and physical attacks became the subject of our opera AN AMERICAN SOLDIER. Through music and words, we continue telling his story, legacy💪
