Oscar Wilde wrote, “every portrait that is painted with feeling is a portrait of the artist, not the sitter.” Well by virtue of that, what better way of showing ourselves to the world than leaving it to your gaze to discover aspects of us as people who paint.

Melancholy, one of those new found pandemic moods, followed by water works, Oo what’s that, autopilot ... wait not that turn! It loops back to (le sigh) melancholy. Face palm. #thismightbe #arecce #photograph #butwhocares taken in Lovech by @vritpat

I’ve been feeling a bit homesick lately. It’s almost like being back at university — not returning home for months at a time. The only difference is that while I type this tonight I can hear my thoughts pause every time my fingers lift off the keyboard grasping a plain blankness not akin to home.

It’s comparable to that kind of nihility you seek when you feast your eyes on a spot of blue and beg your limbs to melt into a temporarily claimed patch of green. The only difference is that now, when you roll over to dust yourself, you find not even strewn atoms pat your back.

Looking back at this photograph of Stanford Memorial Church taken from my visit in 2018, I see the microcosm of familial bond that it, to me, represents. Stanford uni was constructed as a memorial to their son by Senator & Mrs. Stanford and years later, the Church was commissioned by Jane Stanford as a memorial to her husband Leland.

…

The Church was designed by Charles A. Coolidge. The mosaic on the front of Stanford Memorial Church portrays a moment just before Christ’s ascension (Luke 24:50- 5l); and below, a Tree of Life embraces the virtues of Love, Faith, Hope, and Charity. The images were based upon original watercolours created by artist Antonio Paoletti. The mosaic is a careful curation and combination of scenes from the Old Testament and New Testament that represented men and women equally.

Trump piñata - por favor!

So I happened to chance upon this quirky little store in 2018 when my airbnb host decided to give me a lift to the train station one morning and had to stop by her store on the way — and this was it. A second generation immigrant American she ran this store in Mission District, San Fran.

I remember feeling back then how different the America of 2008 was from when I was revisiting a decade later. There was an underlying struggle of ‘belonging’ that hit a chord with me in the strangest way possible.

It’s way harder to make people realise that you’re living, experiencing and sharing the same cultural, socio-economic and political environments as them when they call you out to be different. In that split second you stop belonging. That’s the struggle I could relate to over breakfast with my host and honestly the mental / symbolic image of just breaking down walls built around our identities is very appealing.

This is a snapshot of a little play put up by friends of my Airbnb host in their backyard in Beacon in June 2018. Honestly the cultural context of the narrative was kinda lost on me BUT that nifty setup will forever be etched in my memory.

As I paved my way out through the clutter of morning rituals, remains of breakfast being washed down, kids stomping away to play, and friends walking in with coffee & gear; I got an invite for Lee and myself to watch this play they were doing.

Walking through the backyard as I exited I didn’t make much of it. But lo & behold by the evening when I returned from the painting studio the gazebo breathed a new life. It was transformed into a compact, clever stage with a changing room behind the partition and the equivalent of a PCR all packed into that tiny space on stage left where the lamp is. All practicals were on dimmers and a sound console was neatly tucked away in the framed mise-en-scène. The production value of this backyard play was astounding.

The scene transitions were insanely cool, the shifts in lighting, sound everything triggered within plain sight by the characters themselves as they moved around the stage.

I remember sitting on the freshly laid out benches on that warm night with a beer in my hand mingling with strangers and admiring the allure and idyllic comfort of summer.

I’m glad I caught a glimpse of this on my last night in Beacon, NY. taken in Beacon, New York by @vritpat

Adrian Piper: A Synthesis of Intuitions 1965-2016
MoMA (Exhibited from Mar 31-Jul 22, 2018)

Ft. in the carousel here: Vote/Emote (1990)
This installation consists of a row of four black wooden structures that recall voting booths, each with a Lightbox displaying an image from the civil rights struggle. The shelves below the windows include blank notebooks on which museumgoers are invited to respond to various prompts to directives such as “list the fears of what we might know about you”, “list the fears about what we might think of you” or “list the fears of how we might treat you” … leading to pages scrawled with honest reactions. This piece reflects both the atmosphere of 1990 and present day evoking the divide of the decades that intervene. (Notes from Katie Kitamura)

The artist, Adrian Piper, is an American conceptual artist and philosopher whose works centre around issues of gender, feminism and race; influenced greatly with her own study of philosophy and sometimes dotted with humour. This particular exhibition covers 50 years of the Piper’s career across an amazing range of mediums including performance video, drawing and participatory works. Her fortitude lies in evolving as society changes around us.

The thing that stood out for me particularly, in a piece like the one above, is the participatory nature of her work.

She truly animates the notion that she’s not an artist alone but that she’s in a conversation with the public — in a one-on-one dialogue with the viewer. As may be true of most interactive art, Piper constantly elicits from us a commitment - you can never be an innocent, neutral by-stander and she urges us to take what she offers seriously in recognising that art isn’t passive. Through a direct address she makes us question how we function in society and the inherent auspices of laws & rules we live by consciously & unconsciously, being critical of our environments and making decisions as we move along the exhibit. (Notes from MoMA Live)

For the past two years June & July have been travel months. It was one of those resolves one makes at the turn of a decade. This year however these months are being spent cooped up in a snug city apartment with a jagged and achingly familiar skyline for a view. When all I would like to do is spend an afternoon under a brand new patch of sky in the middle of a lush meadow with a beer in my hand and the sweet aroma of a bbq in the air. (Pauses for a long, exasperated exhale to process that imagery...) And while I wallow vainly in reminiscing bygone voyages I shall recall some of my pit stops here. Commencing with this noir image clicked at DXB circa 2018 - an ode to the starting point of every great journey. #thatairportlife #travelfomo #breakingbirthdayresolutions #ouf2020 #iwanttofly #nosedivingintonostalgiainstead #letsgo taken in Dubai International Terminal 3 by @vritpat
