Our students made the most of their summer break through internships where they gained hands-on experience.

Today, we spotlight Haneef Ogundipe who worked at the @uspto_trademark.filing (United States Patent and Trademark Office) in Alexandria, Virginia.

Haneef learned about the patent application and evaluation process. He gained insight into what goes on behind the scenes, working with primary examiners and supervisory examiners to review actively pending patents and search for prior art references in relation to said application.

One key takeaway from the experience, ‘It is important to focus on quality over quantity, especially when working with someone else’s work and ideas.’

Engineering demands practical solutions and innovation. But it’s also about how you connect, communicate, and work with others to build what comes next.💯

This summer, high school juniors and seniors participating in the Center for Engineering Excellence and Discovery’s (CEED) summer programs discovered new ways to connect engineering concepts with others through a series of applied theatre workshops with CCS.

Students explored the "why" behind their interest in engineering while they practiced taking risks, communicating across differences, and collaborating in new ways.

We loved seeing these students grow in courage and in skills that will serve them as engineers — and as teammates, communicators, and future leaders! 🧡 💫

Join us in celebrating one of our senior capstone teams who were recently awarded second place during the Rice360 Institute for Global Health Technologies Undergraduate Design Competition for their Surgical Skin Stapler device. They also received the Open Source Innovation Award.

Both awards are extremely special as over 100 teams applied to be a part of the competition.

“The team developed not just a device but an entire ecosystem, including locally producible staples and a reloadable cartridge, aimed at reducing reliance on costly, single-use supplies.

“It’s about elevating visibility of these challenges,” team member Anika Mukul said. “A lot of our work is based on needs people don’t even realize exist.”

We were thrilled to host the 3rd annual Project S.E.R.V.E. National Design Competition, sponsored by PenFed Credit Union over the weekend at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC.

Challenged with creating a cold-weather limb warming device for veteran para-athletes, the students presented their work from the past year to a panel of judges and peers. It was an inspiring and innovative weekend!

Congratulations to all the winners, including the team from @vt_meche who took second place.
