Happy Summer! Vtree is proud to have planted 200+ trees on Vassar’s campus. Ranging from 8 inches to 8 feet tall, we are confident these native species will give back to the local ecosystem as well as future generations of the Vassar community. Thank you for a great year! 🌳✌️ taken in Vassar College by @vtree_initiative

Happy Earth day! 🌎

Last weekend, with tree saplings provided by the Vassar Grounds Crew, VTREE’s team of volunteers planted over 100 trees along the Casperkill riparian zone, which feeds into Sunset Lake!

Thank you so much to the Grounds Crew, the Office of Sustainability, the Arboretum Committee, the Preserve at Vassar, and everyone else who provided VTREE with supplies and mentorship to get these trees in the ground! We couldn’t have done it without you all.

Especially, thank you to our student and faculty volunteers!

Stay posted for more events this semester…

yours,

Say hello to Juno: VTREE’s first planted tree!!!

Juno is a Juniper (or Eastern Red Cedar). She now calls the edge of the Nircle home. Drop off a rock to welcome Juno to the campus community!

A special thanks to The Vassar Grounds Crew, The Office of Sustainability, The Arboretum Committee, and all of our lovely volunteers for making this tree planting possible. Stay posted for more!

Stay rad,

Happy New Year!
Winter just started but it feels like it’s been forever. Plants show us how to appreciate the season and endure the cold and dark.

Plants Photographed:

1. Common Hawthorn - Crataegus monogyna
Vibrant berries have been used to aid in cardiac issues

2. European Beech - Fagus sylvatica
In a process called marcescence, beech trees don’t drop their dead leaves until the spring to prevent deer browsing

3. Witch Hazel - Hamamelis virginiana
This native shrub has had anti-inflammatory properties when correctly applied to skin

4. English Ivy - Hedera helix
A non-native species that climbs trees and buildings, with fruit often favored by birds

5. Winterberry - Ilex verticillata
A plant in the holly family that grows well in wet locations

6. Chinese Elm - Ulmus parvifolia
A plant with sticking bark that stands out in the wintertime

7. and 8. Eastern White Pine - Pinus strobus
Native trees that historically provided vitamin C during long winters by @vtree_initiative
