we spent the weekend at Dog Mountain in Vermont. it’s 150 acres of a beautifully maintained nature sanctuary dedicated to the special bond held between dogs and their owners. they even had a chapel where owners could memorialize their pups 🥹

we couldn’t have gotten luckier with the perfect weather and autumn foliage 🍁 and seeing Milou so happy always melts my heart ❤️ taken in Dog Mountain, St. Johnsbury, Vt by @waimingsiu

most grief literature mentions that the second year of widowhood is oftentimes harder than the first but i’ve found the opposite to be true (thankfully). while i’m normally an extremely private person, i’ve found that openly sharing about my grief has been immensely healing.

this whole time, i thought i was exceptionally resilient but was recently humbled (🙈🥲) when i read the below (paraphrasing):

“The people who heal fastest aren’t the toughest or most resilient. They are the most supported. Science shows the single strongest predictor of healing speed and depth is not psychological toughness but the quality and consistency of social support available during and after the traumatic event. Research on co-regulation shows that the nervous system heals in relationship, not in isolation or will power. It is through repeated experience of being held and witnessed that helps one carry the burden. The nervous system was never meant to do this alone.”

here’s a BIG thank-you to my whole community, near and far. people from quite literally all over the world continuously check in on me. the “dog park mafia” (as my FIL likes to call them) showed up in full force. i’ve had heart-to-heart talks with people i’ve never even met but their words kept me sane and grounded. my in-laws still warmly embrace me as their family ♥️ i’ve been supported in every direction from that dreadful day where my life felt like it had collapsed inward.

the only reason that i’m even able to stand tall is because of all of you…and my dog 😅 so thank you thank you 🙏🏼 by @waimingsiu

this was the last Father’s Day gift i ever made for my dad before he passed away (he’s been gone since July 2013). i sat there thinking of all the words to describe him and it all came so easily. how lucky was i to love and be loved by him ❤️

after all these years, i still claim to have been his favorite child. sorry not sorry @kinsensiu @yms8 😂🤷🏻‍♀️ by @waimingsiu

i stepped wayyyyy outside my comfort zone this wknd and participated in a deadlift competition. didn’t really tell anyone about it either 🤐 (i had zero delusions of winning, LOL~). i generally avoid the spotlight so attempting a weight i’ve never tried in front of an audience and panel of judges was a bit nerve-wracking.

but i managed to pull a 235 lb conventional deadlift with a regular (overhand) grip 💃🏻

on my first day back at the gym after Scott’s death, i returned as an emotionally tattered shell of a human being. i remember crying during the warm-ups and silently wondered what even was the point? but i’ve since learned that you can never go wrong investing in yourself. strength training has been a powerful way of coping with my grief. if you are carrying an especially heavy mental or emotional load, i gently encourage you to seek out movement.

grief has a strange way of reorganizing your priorities. all of my physique goals (along with my lifelong struggle with body dysmorphia) literally disappeared overnight. while Scott is no longer here to cheer me on, he somehow continues teaching me how to be strong 💗 by @waimingsiu

today would have marked my 8th wedding anniversary. i have gone through the full spectrum of emotions throughout the day but thankfully landed on peace.

two weeks ago in Botswana, i managed to capture this photo of the Milky Way ✨ witnessing it felt like a dream.

“let the stars teach you that darkness is needed to see the light.”

i remember gazing up at the night sky…and i silently thanked Scott for watching over me and promised him that i would somehow be okay 💕 by @waimingsiu

Cape Town photo dump 🇿🇦 after my Antarctica trip, my love for solo travel was reignited and so i was incredibly excited to spend a few days in Cape Town entirely by myself.

fun fact: South Africa offers a digital nomad visa that can be renewed up to 3 years. just sayin’… taken in Cape Town, South Africa by @waimingsiu
