We created the Journey Set because we wanted to create a product that facilitated inner exploration for long durations of time. In 1983, Alice Coltrane bought forty-eight acres in the Santa Monica Mountains and largely disappeared from the music she had spent two decades making.
The withdrawal had begun years earlier. When John Coltrane died in 1967 she was 29, a working pianist with four young children. What followed she later described not as grief but as tapas: a Sanskrit term for austerity and purification. Between 1968 and 1970 she fasted, went without sleep, and moved through visions she understood as ordeals to be endured rather than gifts. She wrote about it without softening in Monument Eternal, published in 1977.

At the ashram she was known as Swamini Turiyasangitananda - “the transcendental lord’s highest song of bliss.” She kept making music, but she made it for the few dozen people who lived and studied there: devotional chants in Sanskrit sung over organ, synthesizer and harp , pressed privately to cassette and circulated only inside the community . Four tapes between 1982 and 1995. Aside from one album in 2004, they were the only recordings she made in the last three decades of her life. She traded one of the most acclaimed catalogs in American music for a congregation, and never described it as a loss. by @walden

In 1994, at the height of his career, Leonard Cohen withdrew from public life and relocated to the Mount Baldy Zen Center, an isolated enclave in the San Gabriel Mountains of California.

For the next five years, he lived under the strict guidance of Zen master Kyozan Joshu Sasaki Roshi. Cohen’s days were defined by a grueling, ego-stripping schedule: waking at 2:30 AM, shoveling snow, preparing meals for his teacher, and committing to intense, hours-long periods of seated meditation (zazen).

Ordained as a Rinzai Zen monk in 1996, Cohen took the Dharma name Jikan, translating to “Silence.” He never viewed the monastery as a religious conversion—he remained deeply tied to his Jewish faith—but rather sought out its harsh, structured discipline as a framework to survive his lifelong, severe depression. by @walden
