Join us on 10/17 at 12PM for the grand opening of Courts 2.0 @thecourtspdx, a collaborative effort led by Portland State University, Prosper Portland @prosperportland, and Portland’s skateboarding community, designed by Walker Macy with support from Humber Engineering. Additional funding was provided by Skaters for Portland Skateparks and ASICS Skateboarding @asics_skateboarding . Built by Grindline Skateparks @grindlineskateparks and Mohr Customs @mohrcustoms , the project transforms an underutilized site into an active, welcoming public space. Rooted in community support, Courts 2.0 is the first skate plaza developed on a college campus and it brings skateboarding and public life together in a new type of downtown destination that will serve as an inclusive community hub for years to come.

Two open-air pavilions, Cascade Terrace and Wildlife Pavilion, opened to the public last week at the Oregon Zoo. The new structures were key elements in the overall plaza enhancement project to upgrade the zoo’s entry and eastside hub. The design team celebrated in true zoo fashion with an Elephant Encounter with Sung-Surin (Shine).

Central Washington University’s North Academic Commons (NAC) will officially open on October 2nd. The NAC sits at the heart of CWU’s Ellensburg Campus and will serve as the nexus for student life, fostering connection, collaboration, and inclusion. The building brings together arts, humanities, and social sciences departments to support interdisciplinary learning with adaptable classrooms and integrated study and gathering spaces.

Deschutes Central Library is open to the public! This innovative library celebrates its connection to Central Oregon with spectacular views of the surrounding High Desert landscape and volcanic peaks. The site derives its character from the setting, featuring rocky landforms that envelop outdoor spaces, weathering steel and basalt walls, Ponderosa pines and extensive native plantings. Multiple outdoor spaces support community events and visitors of all kinds - we hear that a few friendly local llamas were recently in attendance. Thanks to @millerhull and @deschuteslibrary for the fantastic collaboration!

The Walker Macy team spoke at WASLA Field Day about two recently opened projects at the periphery of the UW Campus: the UW ICA Basketball Training Facility and the UW Montlake Medical Center Arrival. Serving the athletic district and hospital respectively, both projects were designed to instill a sense of place in areas that have traditionally been treated as functional and secondary to the campus experience. The team discussed the ways that two very different site designs help welcome the public, create identity, support complex vehicular and pedestrian access, and provide creative design solutions to universal accessibility.

Read about our work on Elliott Bay Connections in “Connecting and Revitalizing Seattle’s Waterfront,” a feature penned by Walker Macy’s Lara Rose about how Elliott Bay Connections unifies the Seattle waterfront experience, turning former “pass-through” spaces into civic destinations that highlight our region’s history and beauty. Congrats EBC team!

Congratulations to Urban Designer Cameron Blakely, who is spending the month at the Wright Ingraham Institute as a fellow in the Field Workshop exploring drought adaptation across the San Luis Valley and Taos Plateau. Bringing together designers, researchers, artists, and community practitioners, the workshop examines how hydrology, ecology, culture, and land stewardship can inform more resilient futures. We’re excited to see the ideas and perspectives Cameron brings back to our studio as we continue asking thoughtful questions about how landscapes can adapt and flourish.

Images:
1. Seeing the landscape through indigenous eyes with Dine tribe member, Sunny.
2. Sharing sketches of landscape observations.
3. Group photo in front of a local water awareness mural sponsored by the Rio Grande Headwaters Land Trust.
4. Meeting with local farmers to understand agriculture pressures and water adaptation practices.

The world is coming to Seattle once again.

As fans gather for the Round of 32 match today to watch Belgium vs Senegal, the waterfront offers a chance to experience the city beyond the stadium. From Myrtle Edwards Park to Victor Steinbrueck Park and Pier 62, a network of public spaces creates opportunities to walk, bike, relax, and connect with Elliott Bay before and after the game.

Through Elliott Bay Connections and the restoration of Victor Steinbrueck Park, Walker Macy has helped strengthen the links between Seattle’s iconic waterfront destinations—creating places that support everyday recreation while welcoming the energy of major civic events.
